LSPA - Statistics of Agricultural Production

The Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production - LSPA provides estimates on planted areas, harvested areas, amount produced and average yield of selected products, based on the criteria of social and economic importance for Brazil. It not only follows up each crop investigated in the calendar year of reference, from the intention to plant up to the end of the harvest, yet also the forecast of the harvest in the coming year, for which the months of October, November and December are surveyed.

The LSPA was implemented in November 1972 aiming at addressing the user demands for short-term statistical information at a monthly basis. The list of products to be released was revised in the end of 2017, based on the following parameters: in order to be released in the survey, the product should represent at least 1% of the value of the national production or at least 1% of the Brazilian agricultural area. Based on such criteria, the new list of products investigated by the LSPA from 2018 onward comprises 18 products that represent, together, about 93% of the value of production and about 97% of the agricultural area in Brazil, according to the Municipal Agricultural Production - PAM survey related to the 2011-2013 triennium.     The 20th and 21st centuries have seen transformations that have had a major impact on health, both globally and locally. These changes have affected lifestyles, the environment, work, technology, the economy and also healthcare systems. Today we know that human health is inseparable from the health of the planet, and this vision has also inspired the 17 Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs), adopted as a commitment in 2015 by world leaders under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). These put the lines of action necessary to achieve and ensure at least minimum levels of well-being for the entire world population on the international agenda. They include, as priorities, health, the fight against poverty and the protection of the planet. […]

    Unfortunately, the emergence of Covid-19 and the pandemic declared in 2020 have delayed efforts to declare a climate emergency, despite the fact that climate change is considered the greatest health threat in the 21st century and even though we know that Covid-19 has provided an example showing that human health is inseparable from the health of the planet. […] Climate change involves an increase in a whole series of direct and indirect risks and impacts on human health that are already having a negative impact on morbidity and mortality, as many studies have shown. The World Health Organization (WHO) reminds us that when we speak of a climate crisis, we are also speaking of a health crisis inseparable from it.

    We are, therefore, facing a global problem with global implications requiring an immediate response. As guarantors, defenders and protectors of health, and as professionals looked up to by the public, doctors have a special responsibility and can aspire to play an important role in this struggle. […] People look to doctors for leadership in terms of health and for this reason we have a responsibility to help educate citizens in good habits regarding both the care of their own health and the care of the planet.

    Our principal mission is to protect health and we therefore urge local, regional, national and international organizations to begin to legislate, make immediate agreements and take measures that will help slow down climate change and move us away from the emergency situation. […] We doctors offer our full cooperation in as far as our knowledge and our role can be useful in achieving these objectives.

Abstract

Ageing is associated with a progressive decline in cognitive function, which occurs according to heterogeneous trajectories, dependent on multiple physiological and environmental components. To tackle this major challenge, we designed a project to test the effect of a tailored physical exercise intervention program in the cognitive function of a Portuguese elderly cohort, included in the AGA@4life project. The exercise program included aerobic and strength components, prescribed in a personalized approach according to the AGA@4life model, and implemented under direct control of two experienced professionals. The 33 included elderly participants were divided into two groups (intervention group – IG – and control group – CG) according to their willingness to participate in the physical training program. Cognitive function was evaluated with the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) platform at baseline and three months after the intervention period in all the participants. The groups had similar clinical and demographic characteristics at baseline. After the intervention program, significant improvements in cognitive function were observed in the IG, but not in the CG. Particularly, a significant improvement in motor control, spatial working memory, and visuospatial associate learning were depicted in the IG, which revealed an overall better cognitive performance as compared with the CG after the follow-up period. The results clearly identify physical exercise as an effective non-pharmacological tool to positively modulate age-related decline in cognitive function in older adults, particularly when prescribed in a personalized approach with a multicomponent structure as foreseen in the innovative AGA@4life model.
