SOME MEDICALLY COMPROMISED PATIENTS MAY NOT BENEFIT FROM TELEMEDICINE

(1ˢᵗ §) Telemedicine, which has seen a rapid expansion since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, benefited some sectors of the population, but research led by the University of California shows that the benefits were not evenly felt across all race/ethnic groups. Limited English proficient, medically underserved patients faced several language and socioeconomic barriers that may have compromised the services' effectiveness.

(2ⁿᵈ §) Prior to the pandemic, telemedicine was an optional, convenient format for doctors and nurses to deliver healthcare and provide advice to patients who desired the convenience of "seeing" their primary care physician or a nurse virtually. With COVID-19, federal and state policy changes were adopted that allowed for the rapid expansion of telemedicine services across the U.S., as temporary measures to lessen the spread of the virus during the early stages of the pandemic.

(3ʳᵈ §) "Unfortunately, the convenience of telemedicine wasn't felt by all groups. Our study highlights the importance of understanding the structural vulnerabilities of patients from marginalized communities, whose perspectives have largely been left out of conversations about this emerging healthcare service," said corresponding author Denise Diaz Payán, Ph.D., MPP, an assistant professor of health, society, and behavior at the UCI Program in Public Health. "We found that older patients with limited English proficiency and digital literacy faced the greatest barriers in accessing quality telemedicine services", said the professor.

    Choice is our ability to make decisions when presented with two or more options. The psychology of choice explores why we subconsciously make the decisions we do, what motivates those decisions, and what needs these decisions are meant to satisfy.

    I don’t know about you, but I get stressed when someone asks me what I want for lunch. Food delivery apps give us hundreds of restaurants willing to bring our meals right to our door. Entertainment apps give us thousands of movie titles to choose from on a Friday night.

    We live in an unprecedented age of options. And that can make choice difficult.

    Choice is the purest expression of free will – the freedom to choose allows us to shape our lives exactly how we wish (provided we have the resources to do so).

    But choice is difficult because it also represents sacrifice. Choosing something inherently means giving up something else – something we might want tomorrow, or next week – and that won’t be available to us if we don’t grab it today.

    All choices are made to satisfy five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom, and fun.

    Sign language set to music has become trendy on TikTok, particularly among hearing creators. But with its growing popularity, many deaf and hard of hearing creators, who rely on sign language to communicate, worry that TikTok is allowing incorrect signs to spread like wildfire.

    The issue has grown so large that the National Association for the Deaf posted a video last month criticizing the rapid spread of unqualified people teaching incorrect sign language on social media, saying that it’s doing “devastating harm” to the deaf community.

    When using sign language, even small changes, such as using the wrong hand shape or moving hands the wrong way, can make a sign unintelligible or give it a different meaning than intended.

    The sign language mistakes on social media can be so significant that Kilee Ashton, who is Deaf, said she often can’t understand what someone is trying to say. “It’s ugly to watch,” she said.

    Ashton said that she and other deaf people have tried to point out mistakes to creators, but they have been blocked or had their comments deleted.

People who read books are nicer than those who don’t, study finds.

 

People often think that, yes, books make you smarter but at the same time people who read a lot struggle when it comes to social relationships. A new study reveals that this is not true. In fact, reading could actually make you a _____, _____ person. It also makes you act in a _____ acceptable manner.

 

The study, conducted by Kingston University in London, involved 124 participants. Participants were quizzed on their preferences for books, TV, and plays. They were also tested on interpersonal skills including how much they considered other people’s feelings and whether they acted to help others.

 

The study found that those who preferred books were more likely to act in a socially acceptable manner compared to those who preferred watching TV. Those who preferred watching TV, on the other hand, came across as less friendly and less understanding of others’ views.

 

However, not all types of books tend to have the same effect. The study shows that the type of literature you choose also has a huge impact on your emotional intelligence. In particular, the study revealed that fiction fans showed more positive social behavior while readers of drama and romance novels were found to be the most empathic. In the same vein, fans of experimental books were most able to see things from alternative perspectives, and readers who favored comedy fans were best at relating to others.

 

“Exposure to fiction relates to a range of empathetic abilities […] Engaging with fictional prose and comedy in particular could be key to enhancing people’s empathetic abilities,” said the researchers during the British Psychological Society conference in Brighton.

 

It should be borne in mind, however, that the study did not prove cause-and-effect. It may very well be that nicer people are more drawn to reading books.
