Can Ergonomic Desk Chairs Relieve Back Pain?
Many people spend hours each day sitting in uncomfortable desk chairs. An awkward or ill-fitting chair could be placing added stress on the spine and causing back pain. Desk chairs with little lumbar support can lead to slouching. Other chairs cause the user to lean forward too much to work or view a monitor. If the desk chair is too high or too low for the user, this can negatively affect the position of the hips, pelvis, and low back. Pain can often be alleviated with a chair that can be adjusted to fit the body of the user.
An ergonomic desk chair may help alleviate back pain. However, to work best, it must be adjusted to fit the individual user’s body and comfort level. Remember that sitting in one position for extended periods of time in any type of chair is not good for the back. People should try to stand, stretch, and walk around periodically to keep muscles and joints loose and to increase blood flow.
If your back pain interferes with normal daily activities and has not improved with at-home treatments, it may be time to see a physician. Pain that spreads down one or both legs or causes weakness, numbness, or tingling in the legs is another reason to schedule an appointment with a specialist.

Making perfume is an art that can be traced back to ancient Greece but now modern-day perfumiers are beginning to look beyond their noses to develop the scents most likely to appeal to us. They are, instead, turning to AI.
Perfumes can now be designed to trigger emotional responses using ingredients known as neuroscents – odours shown by biometric measures to arouse different positive feelings such as calm, euphoria or sleepiness.
Hugo Ferreira, a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering in Lisbon, is mapping brain activity and response to perfumes to build a database of neuroscents. “With sight and hearing, you can imagine the face of a loved one or favourite tune. It’s hard to imagine a smell even though [it] can provoke a torrent of emotions and memories.”
Ferreira says this is due to the structure of the olfactory system. Messages from scent receptors are sent via the olfactory bulb to different brain areas that control everything from memory or thirst to stress reactions. “Olfaction is the most diverse sense with many different receptors. It’s estimated that there are about 400 different olfactory receptor gene families. Among other things these various connections may explain how we can ‘smell fear’, or the smell of victory.”
Many beauty brands have invested in neuroscent research and technology, as the possibilities of creating fragrances proven to make consumers feel good are obviously big. L’Oréal has partnered with neurotechnology company Emotiv to create a scent choice “experience”. During 2023, shoppers at certain Yves Saint Laurent stores worldwide have used a headset to create an electroencephalogram – EEG – to discover which scents appealed to them. Results so far show that 95% of customers who used the headset found the right perfume.

Why Scratching feels so good (But Is So Bad)
When you’ve got an itch, you probably want to scratch it. But whether it’s from a mosquito bite, chickenpox, or chronic skin issue like eczema, any relief from scratching will be short-lived. And too much scratching can make the problem much worse.
Your muscles, joints, and organs can hurt. But your skin is the only part of your body that can feel both pain and itch.
An itch can be triggered by something outside your body, such as poison ivy, or by something happening on the inside, such as psoriasis or allergies.
Though it feels good, scratching actually triggers mild pain in your skin. Nerve cells tell your brain something hurts, and that distracts it from the itch. It can make you feel better in that moment, but 1 in 5 people say scratching makes them itch somewhere else on their body.
Sometimes the pain from scratching makes your body release the pain-fighting chemical serotonin. It can make the itch feel even itchier.
That’s why the more you scratch, the more you itch. The more you itch, the more you scratch. This cycle can be tough to break, especially if your itch is really bad.
Not all itches are alike. Many happen when your body reacts to pollen, nuts, and other allergens – your immune system makes a chemical called histamine. Others come from a problem with your nervous system, like shingles or a stroke. With those, you might feel numbness and tingling along with the itch.
If you have psoriasis, your itching may feel more like burning. Some people compare it to being attacked by fire ants. Some drugs, like one used to treat malaria, cause a painful all-over itch.
Whatever the reason, it’s important not to scratch too much. It can lead to skin wounds, infections, and scarring. It can also make you feel anxious and stressed.
