Champion of education

    I’M 16 years old and from Dara’a in Syria. I fled to Jordan with my Family two years ago.

    Spending time with Malala Yousafzai made me stronger. I didn’t know her before meeting her in Za’atari camp last year, but I understand she suffered, and yet continues to fight for what she believes in – for rights of children and for their education. She is an inspiration for me.

    When it comes to continuing our education as refugees, I am on the front lines with my friends, speaking to other girls throughout the camp on the importance of going to school. My mother and father are always encouraging me. I saw this in Malala too, and her close relationship with her mother and father.

    I’ve always loved learning and education, but since I fled with my Family, these views have grown stronger. I have seen too much wrong to not use my voice. Malala has shown that education is crucial for laying a foundation for girls and boys to have secure lives.

    I know no matter what I go through today, it will make me a stronger person for tomorrow. Rather than giving up, my friends and I will continue to think positively and try to make our community better. Girls need to learn to take care of themselves, because if they don’t, nobody will. Our lives are completely diferente now – we’ve gone from living in homes to surviving in tents in refugees camps. Education is the only way to regain our spirit and control over our lives.

    I was so honored to be in Oslo to watch Malala be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. To see a Young woman recognized with such an award made me realize that yes, I can make a difference, and I have to continue to fight for what I believe in – that all girls and boys can bring change to our world.

Evolution “Began” In Brazil

 

The theories on evolution and natural selection began with Charles Darwin, who made public his groundbreaking ideas in a book entitled On the Origin of Species, which was first published in 1859. Darwin found the inspiration for his ideas while on a research trip aboard the ship the H.M.S. Beagle. Darwin’s primary destination was the Galapagos Islands, and it was during his five-year voyage from his home in England that he developed his theory of natural selection.

What many people don’t know about Darwin is that his epic voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle, before arriving at the Galapagos Islands, he first arrived in South America in Bahia, Brazil in 1832. Additionally, Darwin wasn’t the only important European scientist to come to Brazil to study nature. Two of Darwin’s fellow Englishmen, Alfred Russel Wallace and Henry Walter Bates, they arrived at Pará in 1848. Wallace roamed the Amazon for four years, and the remarkable Bates explored the Amazon region for eleven years.

Study: Junk Food Doesn’t Only Make You Fat, It Makes You Lazy

 

According to a recent study by researchers at the University of California Los Angeles, a diet rich in processed food and fat leads not only to excess weight but also to less motivation. Researchers found that rats on a junk food diet were significantly fatter than rats on a healthy diet. But the rats with the unhealthy diet also were less active and mentally slower. "Our data suggest that diet-induced obesity is a cause, rather than an effect, of laziness. Either the highly processed diet causes fatigue or the diet causes obesity, which causes fatigue," says lead researcher Aaron Blaisdell.

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY WARNS OF GROWING TRAFFIC PROBLEM IN GERMANY

 

    The agency's “Data on the Environment” report, released Tuesday, found that transport was the only sector in Germany that hadn't seen a drop in greenhouse gas emissions since 1990. Instead, the levels had actually increased.

    According to the agency's data, transport is responsible for around 18 percent of the country's climate-damaging emissions. And the bulk of that amount is produced by vehicles on roads.

    “We're moving in the wrong direction,” the agency's president, Maria Krautzberger, told reporters in Berlin.

    Between 2000 and 2013, freight transport on German roads increased by almost a third, the report said. Krautzberger warned that there needed to be some “urgent” changes, with more efforts made to move goods across Germany and Europe by ship and rail, rather than by road. She added that there could be emissions limits set for trucks, as well as a truck toll for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons.

DON’T TREAT DIVORCED CATHOLICS AS OUTCASTS, SAYS POPE

 

    Pope Francis has declared that divorced Catholics who remarry deserve better treatment from the church, warning pastors against treating these couples as if they were excommunicated.

    Speaking to pilgrims and tourists Wednesday at his first general audience after a summer break, the pope said: "People who started a new union after the defeat of their sacramental marriage are not at all excommunicated, and they absolutely must not be treated that way.

    “They always belong to the church.”

    Divorced Catholics who remarry are seen as living in sin and are not allowed to receive communion during church services, but some have been calling on the church to reverse that.

    Francis' comments come ahead of a Synod church council meeting to be held by the Vatican in October, where the issue of divorce will be discussed in the wider topic of family.
