The answer that would also push away the pain growing in my own stomach. I believe I tried everything, and trusted each new intervention would be the one. None of it ever changed the course. Doses of medications, drips, compressions, bagged breaths, time, and her heart finally stopped. She was only 36. I silently asked her why. A nurse touched my arm and said the two words whose weight made my next breath difficult and whose grip was tight around the pain in my stomach. “The family”.

They had been taken to the waiting room. It was pale blue and the row of lights indicated the soda machine was still empty. My throat was dry. The youngest daughter sat on Dad’s lap looking at pictures in an outdoors magazine. The older sat watching her hands rest in her lap. Her husband’s eyes lifted to me and met mine. I didn’t, couldn’t, say a word. I took in the breath to begin, and he knew. The words never meant quite enough, “All we could ...” They seemed small, like a string of toy boats against a stormy sea, “... her heart ...” I only had to say them, they would have to live them, “So sorry ...”

The Real Harm in Multitasking

    You’ve likely heard that multitasking is problematic, but new studies show that it kills your performance and may even damage your brain. Research conducted at Stanford University found that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time.
    A Special Skill?
    But what if some people have a special gift for multitasking? The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multitaskers – those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance – were actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time.
    Multitasking Lowers IQ
    Research also shows that, in addition to slowing you down, multitasking lowers your IQ. A study at the University of London found that participants who multitasked during cognitive tasks experienced IQ score declines that were similar to what they’d expect if they had smoked marijuana or stayed up all night. IQ drops of 15 points for multitasking men lowered their scores to the average range of an 8-year-old child.

Trump's Terrible Numbers Are a Little Less Terrible

    After spending August stuck right around 37.0 percent approval, Trump has rallied and, as of Sunday night, sat at 38.8 percent, according to “FiveThirtyEight” (other polling aggregators have similar results). His net approval – approval minus disapproval – is only around -16 now, after dipping below -20 in August.
    That’s still awful.
    The move up a couple of percentage points appears to be real. But I'd recommend being extremely cautious in interpreting the change. I’ve seen speculation that it's because Trump appears to have handled the recent hurricanes well. That’s plausible – but so is speculation that the hurricanes, regardless of Trump's actions, helped him by getting the news focus off him for a while. Or perhaps the publicity from striking deals with Democrats, no matter how little substance has been in them so far, is helping him.
    There’s really no way to assess which if any of these factors might be causing the small increase. It’s too small an effect, for now at least, and there are too many stories in the news at the same time.

    Bullying behaviour often emerges in childhood, and the consequences for victims can last a lifetime.

    When RubySam Youngz was singled out by a bully at the age of 10 in her last year of primary school, she felt isolated and confused. She had just moved with her family from England to Wales and the bully honed in on her accent. They then started mocking her appearance. “Nothing really made sense to me,” she says. “I’m in a new place, I don’t really know anyone, no one likes me, and I really do not know why.”

    Youngz says the relentless bullying, which continued through secondary school, had a knock-on effect in all areas of her life, and she took up smoking and drinking in an attempt to cope. Now aged 46, it is only in the past year that she has come to terms with the effect that the bullying had on her.

    “I felt like ‘no one else likes me, so I don’t like me’,” she says.

    Her experience underlines a painful truth. Children, for all their innocence and inexperience of the world, can be some of the most vicious bullies. Their actions, perhaps less hindered by the social norms we learn in later life, can be merciless, violent and shocking. And they can have life-long implications for the victims.
