BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE) IN SCHOOLS
It is generally accepted that regular exercise improves health and fitness. Health can be defined as a state of complete mental, social and physical well-being; not merely the absence of illness or infirmity. Fitness has been described as the ability to meet the demands of the environment.
The benefits from doing regular physical exercise include:
• improved confidence;
• relief from tension / stress;
• weight loss / control;
• improved posture / body shape;
• improvement in co-operation / team skills;
• meeting people /making friends.
As children are continuously developing physically and emotionally, they are especially affected by the benefits of activity; conversely, there can be negative effects of inactivity.
Schools cannot control or dictate the amount of exercise a child gets at home or outside school. Consequently, it is vital that schools provide formal PE lessons to ensure that children stay active and get some form of regular exercise, especially as they spend a good proportion of the day there. The PE programs in schools directly affect a child’s health; some of the health benefits being:
• combating obesity;
• reducing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, asthma;
• sleep disorders and other illnesses.
So, what are the most common sports that school children participate in? A 2013 UK study by the Department of Education titled, Evidence on Physical Education and Sport in Schools reported that:
• 5-10 year olds were mostly doing swimming and tennis.
• 11-15 year olds participated in football, tennis, rugby, cricket, table tennis and athletics.
• Across both age groups there had been a significant reduction of walking/hiking.
Generally, school PE programs will focus primarily on the actual physical aspect however there is now a shift in emphasis towards also learning about the fundamentals of healthy lifestyles. In addition to plenary sessions, schools are using game-based activities that are fun and educational to promote the importance of exercise, healthy food, balanced diets, importance of sleep, ‘5-a-day’, consequences of smoking, drugs and alcohol, impact of eating too much sugar, salt and fat, junk food etc.
Globally, all schools will have PE as part of their curriculum at all stages of the child’s school career and will usually insist on the child’s participation in the designated activity. This aspect of their education should help children to evolve and grow but at the same time maintain their desire to continue with ‘PE’ post their formal school career.

WASHINGTON — President Trump paid tribute on Tuesday to the airline passengers and crew members who stormed the cockpit of a hijacked plane and thwarted terrorists in the skies over Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, vowing to follow their example by standing up to evil in the world. In his first trip to Shanksville, Pa., as president, Mr. Trump led a ceremony marking the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attacks by honoring the heroes who brought down United Airlines Flight 93 into an unpopulated field rather than allow it to be used as a weapon against the nation’s capital. “We remember the moment when America fought back,” Mr. Trump said in a televised address at the Flight 93 National Memorial at the site of the crash, which killed 40 passengers and crew members. Referring to those on board who rose up that day in an effort to take back the plane, he said, “They boarded the planes as strangers and they entered eternity linked together as true heroes.”Ceremonies were also held on Tuesday in New York, where two hijacked planes slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, and at the Pentagon, where another plane was used to attack the headquarters of the American military. Vice President Mike Pence and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis led the commemoration at the Pentagon. In New York, police officers gathered at the Midtown North Precinct where flags were lowered to half-staff and names were read of colleagues who were lost rushing into buildings trying to save lives. “Never miss a chance to let those held dearest know your love for them,” the precinct said on its Twitter feed, using a heart symbol for the word love. Mr. Trump was at Trump Tower on the day of the attack, not far from the World Trade Center. He famously claimed during his presidential campaign that “thousands and thousands of people were cheering” in Muslim communities in Jersey City, N.J., when the World Trade Center collapsed, an assertion that has been widely debunked. As he traveled to Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Mr. Trump offered praise for Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was the mayor of New York on the day of attacks and now serves as his personal attorney. “Rudy Giuliani did a GREAT job as Mayor of NYC during the period of September 11th,” Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter. “His leadership, bravery and skill must never be forgotten. Rudy is a TRUE WARRIOR!” Mr. Trump made no mention of former President George W. Bush or other political leaders from that day.
