The U.S. and Russia announced an agreement

Saturday aimed at setting a timetable for destruction

of Syria’s chemical weapons and averting a

proposed U.S. military strike against the war-torn

Middle Eastern nation.

Under the agreement, hammered out on the

third day of tense talks in Geneva, the Organization

for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the

United Nations will be responsible for dismantling

Syria’s chemical weapons capabilities.

Syrian President Bashar Assad would be

required to provide an accounting of those weapons

within a week.

“The world will now expect the Assad regime to

live up to its public commitments,” Secretary of

State John Kerry said in announcing the deal in

Geneva. “And as I said at the outset of these

negotiations, there can be no games, no room for

avoidance, or anything less than full compliance by

the Assad regime.”

President Obama called the deal a “concrete

step toward the goal of moving Syria’s chemical

weapons under international control.”

“This framework provides the opportunity for

the elimination of Syrian chemical weapons in a

transparent, expeditious, and verifiable manner,

which could end the threat these weapons pose not

only to the Syrian people but to the region and the

world,” Obama said in a statement.

An official of the OPCW, who asked not to be

named because he was not authorized to speak

about the agreement, said details of the plan have

not been worked out but the agency welcomes the

agreement and would work to implement it.

WASHINGTON — With the announcement on

Saturday that the U.S. and Russia have reached an

agreement_______________Syria’s chemical

weapons stockpile, the American threat of U.S.

military action was effectively taken off the table.

After more than two weeks of saber-rattling —

and an unsuccessful effort by President Obama to

win congressional and public support for a limited

military strike — it was a last-minute diplomatic

push led by the Russians that saved the day.

But the Obama administration is wading into the

deal — which will undoubtedly be scrutinized by a

Congress that is distrustful of Russian President

Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar Assad

— with eyes wide open.

“The international community expects the Assad

regime to live up to its public commitments,”

Obama said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

“While we have made important progress, much

more work remains to be done.”

Secretary of State John Kerry was even more

blunt about U.S. caution.

“We have committed to a standard that says verify

and verify,” Kerry __________ at news conference

in Geneva, where he and his Russian counterpart,

Sergey Lavrov, announced the framework of the

agreement to secure and destroy the Syrian

chemical weapons stockpile.

In previous comments, Obama has made clear

that trusting the Russians and Assad will not be easy.

The president’s relationship with Putin is

famously tense, with the two sparring over Syria

policy and Putin’s decision to give temporary

asylum to former National Security Agency

contractor Edward Snowden after he leaked a

treasure trove of classified information on U.S.

intelligence surveillance practices.

civilians alike flew into a state of mobile hackerphobia.

While security remains a concern in

today’s voyeuristic, information-obsessed world,

companies who promise protection against data

leaks have built an industry. One that feeds off the

paranoia of those with too little time to dance with

the latest security techniques.

Mission Impossible-like features to mobile

texting and image sharing. Users can send

encrypted messages that are decoded by the

recipient and, after the sender’s determined

amount of time, deleted from both sides.

Celebrities like Brad Delson of Linkin Park and

Adam Richman from the Travel Channel’s Man vs.

Food have already adopted the free app

(application software) and, fingers crossed, it

hopes to become the standard of the entertainment

industry.

“Before we launched Privatext, our

development team spent weeks testing our

application to make sure that no messages were

saved anywhere after they were deleted,” said

Privatext CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and

Founder Justin Schwartz. “When our team was

finished, we hired the brilliant team over at

Decipher Forensics just to make a hundred percent

certain we covered all of our bases. After they

gave us a clean bill of health, we launched.”

The sign-up process after downloading the

app is pretty quick: The user inputs an email

address and cell phone number. The app then

generates a PIN (Personal Identification Number)

like the ones used in Blackberry’s messaging

system. To send a message, the user adds a contact

using the other person’s PIN and waits for the

recipient to approve the invitation.

From there, it’s a typical chat exchange except

that after anywhere from 30 seconds to 24 hours,

the messages vanish. Expiration can be adjusted

on the fly so if one message is more sensitive than

another, expiration can be tailored accordingly.

Privatext’s current interface is clean and easy to

navigate, and while the color scheme leaves a bit to

be desired, all in all, the app does what’s promised.

But with reports of the NSA (National

Security Agency) monitoring the most random

forms of apps and services like World of Warcraft

and more recently Angry Birds, it wouldn’t be too

far-off to imagine the same thing happening if

Privatext becomes the powerhouse it’s banking on.

“Privatext is technology’s equivalent of

having a face-to-face conversation,” Schwartz

says. “If the NSA, or anyone, believes that all

Privatexts should be monitored, it would be the

same as saying that every conversation on the

planet should be recorded in some form, and I

don’t see that happening any time soon.”

Next week, Privatext plans to launch an

updated version of the app that includes a sexier

graphic redesign and navigation improvements.

The company also offers their technology on an

enterprise level to corporate clients and hospitals

for a fee to offset giving it away to consumers. Best

of all, Privatext promises not to sell user

information to third parties, so there’s no need to

worry about unknowingly signing up to the

Nigerian scam of the week club.

Privatext is now available for iOS and Android

via iTunes and Google Play.

If you're having trouble falling—or staying—asleep at night, your diet could be to blame. Steer clear of these top sleep saboteurs, and you should be getting a good night's rest in no time, says dietitian Shelly Redmond, R.D., author of Eat Well and Be Fabulous.

• You know that caffeine will keep you wide-awake, but what you may not realize? Coffee and soda aren't the only culprits. Some OTC meds contain caffeine, too, as do many teas. If you're caffeine-sensitive, start opting for decaf and checking the labels of any meds you're planning to take about eight hours before bedtime.

• A glass of wine might sound like it'll help you relax and fall asleep, but studies have actually found that alcohol causes frequent waking at night, says Redmond. See, while booze may help you drift off, it also reduces REM sleep—and without it, you won't feel like you've logged any shuteye at all. So stick to just one glass no more than one to two hours before bed to avoid a rocky night.

• Water is great for weight loss and staying healthy but can have the unfortunate side effect of waking you up for middle-of-the-night bathroom breaks. And not only do 2 a.m. restroom runs interrupt your sleep cycle, but they can also cut into your REM sleep. Try to avoid drinking fluids 60-90 minutes before your usual bedtime to make sure you actually spend all night in bed.

• Tyramine, an amino acid found in aged and fermented foods, stimulates the brain and could keep you up at night as a result. Aged cheese, smoked fish, and cured meats all contain it—so if you must have a cheesy snack before bedtime, stick to the fresh stuff, like mozzarella.

• Anything with a lot of acid can cause heartburn and discomfort during the night—and that includes tomato-based foods and spicy dishes. To prevent tossing and turning, Redmond recommends staying away from these types of foods at least three hours before you hit the sack.
