    It has been said that many people are victims of
calcuholism, a dependence on the use of calculators,
causing a diminished ability to do mathematics on
one’s own. Technology in schools, offices, and industry

calculators, Calcuholism can be avoided if schools
and individuals concentrate on using the mind to do

processing systems are commonplace because they
increase speed and improve efficiency. Business
people may spend hours working with numbers
and rarely calculate mentally. In industry as well,
[30] the emphasis on advanced machines results in
individuals’ solving fewer mathematical problems on
their own.
    To alleviate the problem, schools should
avoid allowing students to use calculators too
[35] early and should require sufficient in-class work
without them. All of us should restrict our use of
calculators and strive to do math on our own so that 

we will not lose our basic math skills.
    Calcuholism has increased in recent years
[40] and will continue to increase due to advances
in technology. To avoid dependency, we must
do mathematics with our minds from time to time rather
than with a machine.

    Bizarre tales of people cooking, wandering
outdoors, and even driving around while fast asleep
are part of a phenomenon known as somnambulism,
or sleepwalking. While your natural inclination might

    Dr. Mark Mahowald, a sleep specialist at Stanford
University, says that, while it wouldn’t necessarily hurt

especially vigorously, might confuse or distress them
temporarily. Disoriented, they may strike out at anyone
close. “Best thing you can do is turn them around and
[15] send them back to bed. It is not likely that a sleepwalker
when woken up suddenly will have a cardiac event. It
is no different from when a person sleeping normally is
suddenly awakened by, say, a loud noise. The important
thing is to protect a sleepwalker from themselves.
[20]    While still somewhat stigmatized, sleepwalking
is incredibly common. Actually, between 1 percent
and 15 percent of the United States population
sleepwalks, and almost all children have had
sleepwalking episodes, according to The National Sleep
[25] Foundation.”Sleepwalking is part of the human
condition,” Mahowald said. “It is absolutely not
associated with psychiatric disorders.”
    People who sleepwalk tend to have no memory
of the episode, Mahowald explained. This is
[30] because the behaviors take place without conscious
awareness — they originate from the brain’s central
pattern generator, where the neural pathways for
learned and heavily practiced movements are stored.
For this reason, you won’t find a sleepwalker playing
[35] the piano if that person has no prior musical training or

Why Study Philosophy? What is Philosophy, and Why Should I Study It?

 

    “Philosophy” comes from Greek words meaning “love of wisdom.” Philosophy uses the tools of logic and reason to analyze the ways in which humans experience the world. It teaches critical thinking, close reading, clear writing, and logical analysis; it uses these to understand the language we use to describe the world, and our place within it. Different areas of philosophy are distinguished by the questions they ask. Do our senses accurately describe reality? What makes wrong actions wrong? How should we live? These are philosophical questions, and philosophy teaches the ways in which we might begin to answer them.

    Students who learn philosophy get a great many benefits from doing so. The tools taught by philosophy are of great use in further education, and in employment. Despite the seemingly abstract nature of the questions philosophers ask, the tools philosophy teaches tend to be highly sought-after by employers. Philosophy students learn how to write clearly, and to read closely, with a critical eye; they are taught to spot bad reasoning, and how to avoid it in their writing and in their work. It is therefore not surprising that philosophy students have historically scored more highly on tests like the LSAT and GRE, on average, than almost any other discipline. Many of our students combine studying philosophy with studying other disciplines.

    The most important reason to study philosophy is that it is of enormous and enduring interest. All of us have to answer, for ourselves, the questions asked by philosophers. In this department, students can learn how to ask the questions well, and how we might begin to develop responses. Philosophy is important, but it is also enormously enjoyable, and our faculty contains many award-winning teachers who make the process of learning about philosophy fun. Our faculty are committed to a participatory style of teaching, in which students are provided with the tools and the opportunity to develop and express their own philosophical views.
