What might your office or apartment have in
common with a NASA spaceship? Unfortunately the
answer may be poor air quality. Indoor air pollutants have
been ranked among the top five environmental risks to
[5] public health. Living and working in places rife with air
contaminants and lacking decent ventilation can cause
“Sick Building Syndrome”, which can cause headaches,
dizziness, nausea, and eye, ear, and nose
irritations.Given that people spend more than 90 percent
[10] of their time indoors, air quality matters. Furnishings,
upholstery, synthetic building materials, and cleaning
products in homes and offices can emit a variety of toxic
compounds, like formaldehyde. Indoor air pollution can
also be caused by pollen, bacteria, and molds, as
[15] outdoor air contaminants like car exhaust finds its way
into buildings. All of these are made worse in small
or poorly-ventilated spaces.
Lucky for us, NASA scientists have been working
to understand this problem and find solutions. The good
[20] news is that there’s an easy and affordable way to
combat the presence of the yucky stuff we may be
breathing in, and it comes right from the natural world:
Use houseplants to clean the air. Plants purify theair,
making them part of what NASA calls “nature’s life
[25] support system,” although plants in bloom may be
contributing their own compounds to the air.
So, how do houseplants clean the air? Plants
absorb some of the particulates from the air at the same
time that they take in carbon dioxide, which is then
[30] processed into oxygen through photosynthesis. But
that’s not all—microorganisms associated with the
plants are present in the potting soil, and these microbes
are also responsible for much of the cleaning effect.
Beyond air quality, plants just make people feel
[35] better. For example, hospital patients with plants in their
rooms were more positive and had lower blood pressure
and stress levels. Similarly, indoor plants may make
people smarter by allowing them to stay alert and
reducing mental fatigue.

Coconut oil has earned and lost its reputation as
a so-called superfood in recent years. That’s rightly so,
according to a Harvard professor who has labeled it
“pure poison.”Karin Michels, professor of the
department of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public
Health, explained recently that, regardless of the advice
peddled by unqualified and self-appointed online health
gurus, consuming coconut oil carries a raft of health
risks.Michels said that the substance poses a greater
risk to heart health than lard as it is almost entirely made
up of saturated fatty acids. These are believed to block
our arteries.
Generally, fats packed with fatty acids are those
that are solid at room temperature. According to the
American Heart Association, the average person should
only consume around 11 to 13 grams of saturated fat
per day, or 5 to 6 percent of their total daily
calories.Unsaturated fats such as those found in olive
oil, on the other hand, should also be eaten in
moderation, but they could improve blood cholesterol.
Michels is the latest to question the health benefits
of coconut oil. Last year, the American Heart Association
updated its science advisory, urging the public to avoid
consuming coconut oil if possible. Following an analysis
of over 100 studies dating back to the 1950s,
researchers concluded saturated fats raise so-called
bad cholesterol, or LDL. Coconut oil was found to spike
LDL levels in seven controlled trials.

Salads and fries
To deal with widespread criticism (and the
possibility of legal judgments) that their food is
making people obese, fast-food chains are testing
new health-conscious products in America. This fall
[5] McDonald’s, which has already introduced fruit packs
and salads in many of its international branches, is
testing a new adult version of its Happy Meal. The Go
Active meal includes salad, bottled water, a nutrition
booklet and a clip-on pedometer to encourage walking.
[10] Trying to be more extreme, Burger King last month
showed for the first time a line of Light Combo Meals
that come with a grilled chicken baguette, salad and
bottled water. The new food options are helpful, but
some salads, like McDonald’s Crispy Chicken Bacon
[15] Ranch Salad, can contain more fat than a Quarter
Pounder Hamburger. So, before you get in line, go
online to check calorie counts. Fast food doesn’t have
to mean fat food anymore.

The healing colors of fruit and veg
We all know that it’s recommended that we eat
five portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day, but
did you know that the color of the fruit and vegetables
you eat can also affect your health? “Recent research
[5] has discovered that the darker the fruit or vegetable
you eat, the higher its anti-cancer properties are likely
to be,” explains Ian Marber, one of the UK’s leading
nutritionists.
New research at Glasgow University that compared
[10] the antioxidant levels in red and white grapes concluded
that the rosy-hued variety contain a far higher level of
beneficial chemicals than their white counterparts. The
reason for this is simple. Darker fruits and vegetables
develop their color to protect themselves from the
[15] damaging effect of the UV rays of the sun. As a result,
darker-skinned fruits and vegetables contain more
antioxidants — the healthy chemicals that are thought
to protect us from heart disease and cancer.
When we eat these fruits and vegetables, our
[20] bodies absorb the antioxidants that help protect us from
the damaging free-radical chemicals caused by UV
exposure, pollution, stress and general daily damage.
The best fruits include plums and red apples,
blackberries and blueberries. Darker vegetables
[25] include eggplants, carrots, kidney beans, tomatoes
and peppers. But it must be pointed out that all fruits —
including white grapes and green apples — have a high
level of antioxidants and offer a good source of fiber.
To gain the full benefit from these antioxidant-rich
[30] foods, avoid peeling apples and plums, as it is this
part that contains the richest source of antioxidants,
and, wherever possible, try to eat them raw or very lightly
cooked.
