Tariffs are Generating Significant Revenue
Since 1940, tariffs have generated only a small amount of revenue for the federal government. Prior to the first Trump Administration, for example, tariffs were generating about $3 billion per month. Largely due to tariffs put in place during that Administration – including on Chinese goods and steel and aluminum – monthly tariff revenue grew to about $7 billion per month in the year prior to this Administration. Since then, revenue has expanded dramatically.
Over the course of 2025, President Trump has used various executive powers to enact or increase a large number of tariffs. Through mid-May, these included a 10 percent additional baseline tariff on most imports, a 25 percent rate on automobiles and auto parts, a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum, a 25 to 10 percent tariff on non-USCMA goods from Canada and Mexico, and a 30 percent tariff on most Chinese goods.
Since mid-May, President Trump has announced a number of additional tariffs, either imposed unilaterally or through trade deals. These include new “reciprocal rates” for many countries that vary from 10 to 41 percent, raising the rate on steel and aluminum products to 50 percent, enacting a 50 percent tariff on copper, increasing the 25 percent rate on Canada to 35 percent, reaching a trade deal with the European Union in which most goods are tariffed at 15 percent, and announcing other trade deals with countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, and Indonesia.
Monthly tariff revenue has grown in kind, from $7 billion (0.3 percent of GDP) per month late last year to about $25 billion (1.0 percent of GDP) in July (the total revenue impact will be smaller, as the tariffs will cause income and payroll tax revenue to decline). We expect tariff revenue to grow further and ultimately rise to $40 to $50 billion per month (over 1.5 percent of GDP), before declining some as supply chains adjust.

UDESC Manhã 2026/2Ultra-processed foods linked to cognitive decline
Published on 08/08/2022
Difficulty remembering dates, doing simple math, or performing basic everyday tasks - cognitive abilities such as these usually deteriorate as age advances. Research conducted by scientists at the University of São Paulo (USP), however, shows that the loss is up to 28 percent higher among people who consume more ultra-processed foods. These are food items that have undergone such an intense industrial process that their composition no longer resembles real food. This category includes sliced bread, snacks, and soft drinks.
Cognitive decline was greater among people who consumed more than 20 percent of their daily calories from ultra-processed food. Reaching this proportion is no difficult task: 20 percent is equivalent to three slices of loaf bread a day. The results were presented at the International Alzheimer's Conference, held last week in San Diego, US.
The average consumption of ultra-processed food stands at precisely 20 percent in Brazil. The level is three times lower than in rich nations, where the percentage can go as high as 60 percent. "This is exactly why a country like Brazil is a coveted market for the food industry", said nutritionist Renata Levy, a member of USP's Nutrition and Health Research Center.
According to Brazil's new food labeling rules, the packaging of products high in fat, sugar, or sodium is required to show it conspicuously on the label. Levy finds the new norm a good idea, but states "more needs to be done to discourage the consumption of ultra-processed products".
Another solution to reduce the consumption of bad quality food advocated by scientists is a ban on the sale of ultra-processed products in school cafeterias, as teenagers are the main consumers of this type of product in Brazil.

Lights out: Why all-night parties are in decline around the world
Tighter regulations, higher costs, and the “most sober” generation hit the nightlife industry hard.
Nightclubs around the world are closing their doors earlier than ever before, and some of the world's biggest party hotspots are hosting fewer all-night parties. Club owners and party organizers face tighter regulations and higher costs. But the real culprit is simply that this generation of young people is less interested in club culture than previous generations were.
The Financial Times recently updated an analysis of late-night dance parties. The newspaper found that the number of nightclubs open past 3 a.m. has decreased in 12 out of 15 global cities it analyzed.
So it’s true. From Barcelona to New York and Manchester to Melbourne, the party is ending earlier than ever before.
Nightclubs are also facing competition from day clubs. Several big cities have seen an increase in events that end early in the evening.
Young people today are just not into clubbing like previous generations were. The idea of drinking a lot, dropping a lot of money on drinks and staying out well past sunrise – well, that idea doesn’t appeal to the newer generation of young people. One commentator called Gen Z the “most sober” generation yet.
Younger people are more educated about sleep. More young people say they get eight to nine hours of sleep per night. It’s hard to do that when you’re partying until six or eight in the morning.
Nightclubs won’t completely die out any time soon. But the industry needs to adapt, or else it will continue to shrink.

FATEC 2026/1Scientists long ago realized that we can’t find aliens by climbing into rockets and zipping off to other planetary systems. The enormous distances to the stars (even the nearest is 7 000 times farther than Pluto) means that we simply aren’t about to visit the aliens.
And while some people think that the extraterrestrials may be able to come here, this is not a popular idea among most scientists.
