TWO RIVALS, TOGETHER ON 9/11

[1] Their vitriol seems to be increasing by the

day, but Senators John McCain and Barack

Obama said on Saturday that they planned

to make a rare joint appearance at ground

[5] zero for the seventh anniversary of the

Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The campaigns had already pledged to

suspend their television advertising on

Thursday, and Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama

[10] are scheduled to appear at a forum on

national service at Columbia University that

evening.

The idea of displaying a broader sign of

unity originated in a conversation between

[15] the two men late last week, aides said, after

Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for

president, called Mr. McCain to

congratulate him on accepting the

Republican nomination.

[20] “All of us came together on 9/11, not as

Democrats or Republicans, but as

Americans,” the candidates said in a joint

statement. “In smoke-filled corridors and on

the steps of the Capitol, at blood banks and

[25] at vigils, we were united as one American

family.

“On Thursday, we will put aside politics and

come together to renew that unity, to honor

the memory of each and every American

[30] who died, and to grieve with the families

and friends who lost loved ones.”

The side-by-side appearance will be the

first of several for Mr. McCain and Mr.

Obama in the final two months of the

[35] campaign, including their three debates, the

first of which will be on Sept. 26.

OLDEST GORILLA IN CAPTIVITY DIES AT 55

[1]  The oldest gorilla in captivity, a 55-year-old

female named Jenny, has died at the Dallas

Zoo, her home for more than half a century,

a spokesman said Friday.

[5]  Jenny the gorilla celebrated her 55th

birthday at the Dallas Zoo in May.

Zoo officials decided to euthanize Jenny on

Thursday night because of an inoperable

tumor in her stomach. Jenny had stopped

[10]  eating and drinking recently, and tests

showed that she was unlikely to recover,

spokesman Sean Greene said.

"The last couple of weeks, we noticed that

she hadn't been feeling all that great,"

[15]  Greene said. "It was a quality-of-life

decision."

The International Species Information

System, which maintains records on

animals at 700 institutions around the

[20]  world, confirmed this year that Jenny was

the oldest gorilla in its database.

The zoo held a birthday bash in May to

celebrate Jenny's longevity, with a cake

made of a frozen fruit treats for the guest of

[25]  honor.

Jenny was said to have a sweet disposition

and enjoyed being around people. She was

often seen napping below a fig tree in her

habitat.

[30]  "We had a tough time saying goodbye,"

said Todd Bowsher, curator of the zoo's

mammals in theWilds of Africa exhibit.

"It's very sad that she's passed on, but what

a great life she's had," said Kristen Lukas,

[35]  curator of conservation and science at

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio and the

gorilla species survival plan coordinator for

the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Jenny, a Western lowland gorilla, was born

[40]  in the wild and was acquired by the zoo in

1957. She gave birth in 1965 to a female

named Vicki, and officials aren't sure why

she didn't conceive again. Vicki was sent to

a Canadian zoo at age 5.

[45]  At the time of Jenny's death, she was one

of five gorillas at the Dallas Zoo.

Gorillas in the wild normally live to age 30

or 35, but they can survive years longer in a

zoo, with veterinary care and protection

[50]  from predators. Still, of the roughly 360

gorillas in North American zoos, only four

were older than 50 as of this spring.

According to the International Species

Information System, the oldest living gorilla

[55]  is now Colo, a 51-year-old female at the

Columbus Zoo who was the first gorilla born

in captivity.

Just last month, another gorilla at the Dallas

Zoo, 43-year-old Hercules, died after

[60]  undergoing a medical procedure for spinal

disease.

In 2004, Dallas police shot and killed a 13-

year-old gorilla named Jabari at the zoo

after he jumped over a wall, bit three people

[65]  and snatched up a toddler with his teeth

BRAZIL'S ECONOMY SHRINKS SHARPLY

[1] Brazil's currency has fallen sharply

against the dollar

Brazil suffered its biggest quarterly

decline in economic output for more than

[5] a decade in the final three months of last

year, official figures show.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shrank by

3.6% from the previous quarter, the

largest quarterly decline since 1996.

[10] The fall ends a three year run of

consistent economic growth in Brazil,

although output for the whole of 2008

remained strong at 5.1%.

The figures came on the same day that

[15] the IMF (International Monetary Fund)

predicted a global recession.

The quarterly contraction in Brazil does

not bode well for the coming year and

ends all hope that the country's economy

[20] might avoid the worst ravages of the

global economic downturn.

"The fact that the economy slowed so

sharply in the fourth quarter sets the

stage for an even steeper slowdown in

[25] 2009," said Roberto Padovani at West LB

do Brasil.

In light of the fall in GDP, the Brazilian

Central Bank could cut interest rates -

which stand at 12.75% - this week to

[30] stimulate the economy, analysts

predicted.

Miguel Jose Ribiero of Brazil's

Association of Financial Executives said

he had expected a cut of 1%, but he

[35] "wouldn't be surprised if the cut is bigger".

"The indicators show we could have a

very strong fall in economic activity in

2009," he said.
