[1]MELAMINE CONTAMINATION IN CHINA

[2]On September 12, 2008, in light of reports from China of infant formula
[3]contaminated with melamine, the FDA issued a Health Information Advisory
[4]to proactively reassure the American public that there is no known threat of
[5]contamination in infant formula manufactured by companies that have met
[6]the requirements to sell such products in the United States. That advisory
[7]also warned members of Asian communities in the United States that infant
[8]formula manufactured in China, possibly available for purchase at Asian
[9]markets, could pose a risk to infants. No Chinese manufacturers of infant
[10]formula have fulfilled the requirements to sell infant formula in the United
[11]States.
[12]The FDA contacted the companies that manufacture infant formula for distribution in the United States and received
[13]information from the companies that they are not importing formula and do not source milk-based ingredients from
[14]China.
[15]In addition, the FDA – in conjunction with state and local officials – continues to check Asian markets for food items
[16]that are imported from China and that could contain a significant amount of milk or milk proteins.
[17]The FDA has broadened its domestic and import sampling and testing of milk-derived ingredients and finished food
[18]products containing milk or milk-derived ingredients from Chinese sources. FDA has recommended that consumers
[19]not consume certain products because of possible contamination with melamine.
[20]Melamine is not naturally occurring and is not approved to be directly added to food in the United States. However,
[21]melamine is approved for use as part of certain food contact substances. Low levels of melamine are present in the
[22]environment and trace amounts may occur in certain food commodities as a result of approved uses.
[23]Parents using infant formula should continue using U.S. manufactured infant formula. Switching away from using one
[24]of these infant formulas to alternate diets or home-made formulas could result in infants not receiving the complete
[25]nutrition required for proper growth and development.

[1]THE FUTURE OF TWITTER

[2]  Microblogging platform Twitter has 32 million users, an increase
[3]  from about 2 million a year ago, according to research mentioned
[4]  in the Wall Street Journal. Some Internet measurement services
[5]  show that figure increasing 50% to 100% month over month.
[6]  While it is not clear that Twitter will become as large as social
[7]  networks MySpace and Facebook or video-sharing site YouTube,
[8]  the company could certainly have 50 million visitors by the end of
[9]  the year.
[10]  Because Twitter can be used with ease on both PCs and mobile
[11]  devices, and because it limits users to very short messages of 140
[12]  characters or fewer, it has become one of the largest platforms in
[13]  the world for sharing real-time data. A number of large businesses and celebrities have hundreds of thousands of
[14]  followers on Twitter.
[15]  As Twitter grows, it will increasingly become a place where companies build brands, do research, send information to
[16]  customers, conduct e-commerce and create communities for their users. Some industries, like local retail, could be
[17]  transformed by Twitter - both at one-store operations that cater to customers within a few blocks of their locations and
[18]  at the individual stores of giant retail operations like Wal-Mart (WMT). In either case, having the opportunity to tell
[19]  customers about attractive sales and new products can be done at remarkably low cost while providing for greater
[20]  geographic accuracy.
[21]  Twitter users have set up their own rules of conduct when using the service, not unlike those with MySpace and
[22]  Facebook. These rules were not put together by Twitter itself, which mandates only rules of use. Like many
[23]  social-network sites, Twitter is self-governed by its members, and companies must take that into account as they join
[24]  the service.
[25]  Twitter is still in the early stages of developing a plan for making money as a company, but plenty of large corporations
[26]  like Starbucks are already using it as a marketing tool. Twitter will probably evolve into both a community of individuals
[27]  and a community of companies that provide goods and services for those individuals.

[3]  ample energy to fulfill all the world’s power needs many
[4]  times over. It doesn’t give off carbon dioxide emissions.
[5]  It won’t run out. And it’s free.
[6]  So how on Earth can people turn this bounty of
[7]  sunbeams into useful electricity?
[8]  The sun’s light (and all light) contains energy. Usually,
[9]  when light hits an object the energy turns into heat,
[10]  like the warmth you feel while sitting in the sun. But
[11]  when light hits certain materials the energy turns into
[12]  an electrical current instead, which we can then harness
[13]  for power.
[14]  Old-school solar technology uses large crystals made
[15]  out of silicon, which produces an electrical current
[16]  when struck by light. Silicon can do this because the electrons in the crystal get up and move when exposed to light
[17]  instead of just jiggling in place to make heat. The silicon turns a good portion of light energy into electricity, but it is
[18]  expensive because big crystals are hard to grow.
[20]  Newer materials use smaller, cheaper crystals, such as copper-indium-gallium-selenide, that can be shaped into
[21]  flexible films. This “thin-film” solar technology, however, is not as good as silicon at turning light into electricity.
[22] Right now, solar energy only accounts for a tiny portion of the U.S.’s total electricity generation, because it is more
[23]  expensive than alternatives like cheap but highly polluting coal. Solar power is about five times as expensive as what
[24]  people pay for the current that comes out of the outlets.
[25]  In order to have a hope of replacing fossil fuels, scientists need to develop materials that can be easily mass-

[26] produced and convert enough sunlight to electricity to be worth the investment.
