BRAZIL'S ECONOMY LEAVES RECESSION

[5] Brazil has come out of recession after its

economy grew in the April-to-June quarter.

expanded by 1.9% in the second quarter from

[10] the previous three months. Data also showed

Sweden emerged from recession on Friday, a

sign that economies are starting to recover

from the global economic downturn. Other

countries that have come out recession

[15] include the eurozone's largest economies,

Germany and France. Japan, the world's

second-largest economy, also grew by 0.6%

in the second quarter, less than the 0.9%

growth the government initially estimated.

[20] Most countries have enacted large stimulus

packages to pull themselves out of the slump.

public infrastructure projects, cut taxes on

new cars and passed tax breaks on

[25] companies and individuals. The return to

growth means that Brazil's recession was

comparatively short, amounting to just two

quarters of negative growth. The economy

shrank by 1% in the first three months of

[30] 2009, a revision from the previouslyannounced

0.8%, said statistics agency

IBGE. In the last quarter of 2008, Brazil saw a

contraction of 3.4%, itself a revision from an

earlier figure of 3.8%. On Thursday, the

[35] Brazilian government said inflation had

slowed in August, giving a total of 4.4% for

the past 12 months. The rate is below the

central bank's 2009 inflation target of 4.5%.

BODY WORLDS PLANS CADAVER SHOW DEDICATED TO SEX

[5] German anatomists plan a new show

dedicated solely to dead bodies having sex

as part of the Body Worlds exhibitions.

Gunther von Hagens and his wife Angelina

[10] Whalley show corpses prepared using a

technique invented by von Hagens called

"plastination," that removes water from

specimens and preserves them with silicon

rubber or epoxy resin. "It's not my intention to

[15] show certain sexual poses. My goal is really

to show the anatomy and the function," Body

Worlds creative director Whalley told Reuters

in an interview, adding the sex exhibition may

open next year. Body Worlds exhibitions,

[20] visited by 27 million people across the world,

have been criticized for presenting entire

corpses, stripped of skin to reveal the

muscles and organs underneath, in lifelike

and often the atrical positions. Von Hagens

[25] has already triggered uproar with a new

exhibit which shows just two copulating

corpses.

  As everybody knows, if you do not work out, your muscles get flaccid. What most people don’t realize, however, is that your brain also stays in better shape when you exercise.

  Surprised? Although the idea of exercising cognitive machinery by performing mentally demanding activities – popularly termed the “use it or lose it” hypothesis – is better known, a review of dozens of studies shows that maintaining a mental edge requires more than that. Other things you do – including participating in activities that make you think, getting regular exercise, staying socially engaged and even having a positive attitude – have a meaningful influence on how effective your cognitive functioning will be in old age.
