There's a big difference between a 'fruit juice' and a 'fruit drink'.

If it says 'fruit juice', it must contain undiluted fruit juice. This can have up to 4% added sugar.

If it says 'fruit drink', it must contain at least 5% fruit juice. It can contain a lot more than that.

The pictures on the pack can easily be misinterpreted by a harried shopper. Even if you can't do it in-store, stop and have a read of the packaging when you're at home: the only way to know what you're getting with fruit juices and fruit drinks is to read the label properly. What the labels mean

The juice has been concentrated by removing some of the water, which makes it a lot cheaper to transport. It is then reconstituted by adding water back.

These juices sometimes have vitamins added back in as well, as some of the water soluble vitamins will be lost in the concentration process.

 

For juices made from concentrate, you'll see one of these on the pack:

'Made from concentrate'
'Reconstituted' (from concentrate) 

 

For juices NOT made from concentrate, you'll see one of these on the pack:

'Not from concentrate'

'Pure' (not from concentrate and contains no additives)

'Fresh' (not from concentrate and contains no additives)

Will we ever grow replacement hands?

 

Over the past few weeks on the BBC News website we have looked at the potential for bionic body parts and artificial organs to repair the human body. Now we take a look at "growing-your-own".

There is a pressing need. A shortage of available organs means many die on waiting lists and those that get an organ must spend a lifetime on immunosuppressant drugs to avoid rejection.

The idea is that using a patient's own stem cells to grow new body parts avoids the whole issue of rejection as well as waiting for a donor.

Dr Anthony Atala, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, US, has made breakthroughs in building bladders and urethras.

He breaks tissue-building into four levels of complexity.

• Flat structures, such as the skin, are the simplest to engineer as they are generally made up of just the one type of cell.

• Tubes, such as blood vessels and urethras, which have two types of cells and act as a conduit.

• Hollow non-tubular organs like the bladder and the stomach, which have more complex structures and functions.

• Solid organs, such as the kidney, heart and liver, are the most complex to engineer. They are exponentially more complex, have many different cell types, and more challenges in the blood supply.

 

"We’ve been able to implant the first three in humans. We don't have any examples yet of solid organs in humans because its much more complex." Dr. Atala told the BBC.

Smallest Planet Yet Found Outside Solar System

    LOS ANGELES (AP) – Astronomers searching for planets outside our solar system have discovered the tiniest one yet – one that’s about the size of our moon.

    But hunters for life in the universe will need to poke elsewhere. The new world orbits too close to its sun-like star and is too sizzling to support life. Its surface temperature is an estimated 700 degrees Fahrenheit. It also lacks an atmosphere and water on its rocky surface.

    University of California, Berkeley astronomer Geoff Marcy, one of the founding fathers of the planet-hunting field, called the latest find “absolutely mind-boggling.”

    “This new discovery raises the specter that the universe is jampacked, like jelly beans in a jar, with planets even smaller than Earth,” said Marcy, who had no role in the new research.

    It’s been nearly two decades since the first planet was found outside our solar system. Since then, there’s been an explosion of discoveries, accelerated by NASA’s Kepler telescope launched in 2009 to search for a twin Earth. So far, 861 planets have been spotted and only recently have scientists been able to detect planets that are similar in size to Earth or smaller.

    Here's something to toast to for date night: you're less likely to break up if you're both drinkers.

    A new study conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health claims that couples who drink together are more likely to stay together. More specifically, a married couple is less likely to divorce if they both drink the same amount, albeit moderately.

    This probably doesn't seem like big news. Drinking is a norm in the dating scene, whether it's meeting on your first date over drinks at the bar, a glass of wine with dinner, or out for beers with your group of mutual friends. This difference is that if one partner drinks more than the other, it means bad news for your relationship. After looking at nearly 20,000 married couples, researchers found that the highest divorce rate (over 25%), happened in couples where the husband was a light drinker and the wife was a heavy drinker. However, when the roles were reversed, the divorce rate was reduced to 13.1%.

    Why the big difference?

    "Heavy drinking among women is also less acceptable than among men in our society," Co-author Ellinor Major explained. "A wife's heavy drinking probably also interferes more with general family life — that is, the caring role of the mother, upbringing of children, etc. Perhaps the husband is more apt to the leave the spouse than is the wife when major problems occur."

    But what does this mean for couples who disagree on drinking? Are the findings from this study the kiss of death for your relationship?

    YourTango expert Dr. John McMahon doesn't believe that's necessarily the case. Although it can cause a rift in your relationship, it's an issue that can be managed. He says that people choose not to drink for a variety of reasons, whether it's an allergy, long term illness, religion or personal reasons (such as a history of alcoholism in your family, or you yourself are the recovering alcoholic).
