Why College Athletes Should Not Be Paid

 

Every year people scream and complain that college athletes should be paid for their work on the field. So here are some reasons we shouldn't pay college athletes:

I. It's not what college is about - College is a provided service by each state. College athletes are not professionals and therefore should not be paid. The purpose of going to college is to get the training so you can use it later. That's what the NCAAF provides. Athletes play at the college level and they further use that experience at the professional level where they will be paid, like others.

II. Who's going to pay for it all? - I'm no economist, but it's pretty much common sense if college athletes get paid, costs will go up. The question then would be, how much? If you're a college student going to a major university and you're not an athlete, odds are tuition is going to go through the roof.

III. Which athletes get paid? - This is easily the biggest dilemma of all and would bring many college protests. If the football team gets paid, why not the tennis team or the volleyball team? What about the golf players? How about the chess team as well? Female athletes as well, right? It would never end because you've opened Pandora’s box.

IV. They already get paid - As athletes, they are not held to the same standard as other students. The biggest universities give the athletes the best gyms to workout in, free health insurance for injuries, transportation, food, equipment and most importantly free tuition. That in itself is a payment for three to four years. Would college athletes rather not be provided with such great services and be paid a salary? I think not.

I don’t have one, and if I can help it, I won’t ever get one in the future. And I hate the assumption that I need one, or that I’m strange not having one. I opened a new bank account the other day and the woman who was helping me (and this is a true story) asked me if I was serious when she found out I didn’t have one. She simply couldn’t see how I could live my life without one. I don’t see why – I can be contacted at home or work, so what’s the problem?

Yes, I have a laptop computer and instant access to the Internet; yes, I have a digital camera and yes I have a microwave oven and an I-Pod but I absolutely refuse to get one!

Of course I can see how useful they COULD be, and that if there was a real emergency they could come in handy, but that’s not always the case. No – I’m never, ever going to get one!

Ingredients:

2 x 400g chocolate bars

a bag of small, colourful chocolate ‘smarties’

20 cup cake cases

A small box of cereal

4 plastic (or glass) bowls of two sizes

a kettle

2 wooden spoons and 2 dessert spoons

A tray

( ) Firstly, fill the kettle with water and put it _1_ to boil. Then arrange the cup cake cases on a tray. Secondly, break up the chocolate into pieces and put it _2_ to the smaller bowl.

( ) Then, add the cereal, little by little, and stir with the wooded spoon until there is enough mix for your group and all the cereal is covered in chocolate. Scoop out the mixture with a dessert spoon and place it into cup cases, so that all the cakes are a similar size.

( ) Next, stir the chocolate gently whilst it melts, until it is like a liquid. (It is advisable to take the smaller bowl out of the hot water when you do this to avoid harming yourself)

( ) When the kettle has boiled, pour the water into the big bowl, so that it is half full. Be careful not to scald yourself! Now place the smaller bowl (with the chocolate in it) into the larger bowl (do not let any water into the chocolate bowl), so that the chocolate warms and melts.

( ) Finally, decorate the crackle cakes with ‘smartie’ sweets and place in the fridge for 30 mins – an hour. After an hour, they are good enough to eat. Enjoy!
