    A pioneer in the fight against Covid in Brazil, the CoronaVac vaccine may have its days numbered in the country.

    The vaccine developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac and produced here by the Butantan Institute, played an essential role in the beginning of vaccination against the coronavirus, representing 85% of the doses applied in March 2021.

    Gradually, it lost ground to other brands and ended last year accounting for less than 10% of applications in the country.

    And that rate could decrease even further.

    This is because on Monday (18) the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, announced that the use of the immunizing agent will be restricted to children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years, withdrawing the vaccine from the National Immunization Program for adults.

    In addition, studies show that the effectiveness of CoronaVac as a booster dose against new variants tends to be lower than that of other manufacturers.

    Thus, its use in new vaccination campaigns has been ruled out by the federal government.

    A study, to be published shortly, builds on research conducted five years ago among secondary school pupils which found that the story by John Boyne regularly elicited misplaced sympathy for Nazis. […]

    Boyne’s book is about a friendship between the son of an Auschwitz commandant and a Jewish boy incarcerated in the Nazi concentration camp. Published in 2006, it has sold more than 11m copies worldwide. A film version was made in 2008.

    The centre’s report said: “While most young people who took part in the study recognised the narrative as a work of fiction and many were able to identify and critique its most glaring implausibilities and historical inaccuracies, they nonetheless overwhelmingly characterised it as ‘realistic’ and/or ‘truthful’.”

    It added that many students, after studying the story, reached conclusions that “contributed significantly to one of the most powerful and problematic misconceptions of this history, that ‘ordinary Germans’ held little responsibility and were by and large ‘brainwashed’ or otherwise entirely ignorant of the unfolding atrocities”.

    Among comments from teachers gathered during the research were, “students come to us and literally think the Holocaust IS The Boy In the Striped Pyjamas”; “They come with … ideas that nobody knew about the Holocaust, that people were completely in the dark about it”; and “They feel sorry for the German guard”.

    Stuart Foster, the centre’s executive director, said he had no criticism of Boyne for his work of fiction, but using the novel in lessons about a historical event could be problematic. “In an era of fake news and conspiracy theories, it’s very worrying that young people harbour myths and misconceptions about the Holocaust.” […]

     This is a violent movie – too violent for little ones – and there are moments more “Matrix than medieval. Yet it transcends cheap thrills; we root for the survival of our heroes with depth of feeling that may come to a surprise. The movie keeps drawing you in deeper. Unlike so many overcooked action movies these days, “Fellowship” doesn’t entertain you into a stupor. It leaves you with your wits intact, hungry for more.

Brazilian Poet Manoel de Barros Dies Aged 97

     The author who wrote verses from the "depths of the trifling", as it features in a poem and one of his books, poet Manoel de Barros died on Thursday morning, November 13th, aged 97, in Campo Grande, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul - MS.

     Manoel de Barros was born in Cuiabá and throughout his life he wrote 18 poetry books, in addition to children's books and autobiographical accounts.

      He received a number of literary prizes, two of which were Jabuti prizes (Tortoise prizes) - one in 1989 for "O Guardador de Águas" and in 2002 for "O Fazedor do Amanhecer".

     Manoel de Barros used to say that "poetry is not supposed to be understood, it is supposed to be incorporated. Understanding it creates a wall. One ought to try to be a tree"
