    Traditional medicine has been gradually forced underground in many societies due to pressure from missionaries and governments who perceived such practices as witchcraft. Contrary to those beliefs, however, traditional medicine has proven to be quite effective in treating both chronic diseases and psychological problems, especially those associated with stress, which frequently stem from social alienation, anxiety or loss of self-esteem. Examples of diseases influenced by stress are certain types of ulcers, skin problems and bronchial disorders.
    Traditional medicine is not only effective in treating psychosomatic illnesses, however. Many practitioners of traditional medicine have a solid knowledge of herbs and of their effects in healing organically based illness as well. Rather than perpetuate what is probably a meaningless distinction between psychosomatically based illnesses and organically based diseases, it is probably more useful to emphasize that most traditional healers utilize a holistic approach which deals with a wide variety of problems on three levels: physical, emotional and spiritual. Holistic treatment emphasizes disease prevention and positive changes in lifestyle to ensure a balance among these three aspects of life.
    Traditional medicine is usually community based. Healers are selected by a community process that emphasizes personal qualities, and they frequently have to pass various tests. Because they are from the community, traditional healers usually know their patients personally, and are well acquainted with their backgrounds, lifestyles and cultural beliefs. Another benefit of traditional medicine is that it is decentralized: it is easily and quickly available to individuals for whom traveling to urban centers for treatment is inconvenient, time-consuming and costly.

Cardiff Castle and its Parklands

Just a short walk from Cardiff Castle and the city centre is Bute Park, an extensive area of mature parkland, flanked by the River Taff, Sophia Gardens, Pontcanna Fields and the castle. Few places can boast such a spacious green area in the heart of their city - a very popular “green lung” full of historic and wildlife interest. Containing a stunning, nationally significant arboretum with 50 United Kingdom “Champion Trees”, Bute Park attracts over 1,000,000 visits a year and plays a vital role in the city's events calendar .

Bute Park and Cardiff Castle share a common history, and have played significant roles in the development of the city from Roman and medieval times, through the industrial revolution, up until the modern city of Cardiff we know today. From 1873, the southern section was laid out by Andrew Pettigrew for the Bute family as Cardiff Castle's private pleasure grounds. In 1947 the 5th Marquess of Bute handed over Bute Park and Cardiff Castle to the people of the city of Cardiff.

Superhero for a day: 7-year-old boy with leukemia flies around in a helicopter, rides in the Batmobile, and fights pirates

A 7-year-old boy with leukemia got a very special gift from the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Anaheim, California police department on Monday. Alex is fighting leukemia and the Make-A-Wish Foundation decided to grant him his wish of becoming a superhero. The boy, named Alex Lelenoa, loves watching Batman and playing Batman video games.

Monday, he got to play with Batman in real life. Alex proudly dressed up as his favorite superhero, Robin. He was met by Batman who led the boy on an adventure he would never forget. Together, the pair fought cowboys and pirates. He was then sworn in by the Anaheim Police Department as a real crime fighter.

After fighting villains in Buena Park, California, he was taken by helicopter to Angel Stadium and then returned to the police department to find a Batmobile waiting for him. Batman and Robin drove the Batmobile around Orange County.

‘I feel really thankful for the foundation,’ said Alex after his day of fighting crime. His mother, Elizabeth Stoffer, was overwhelmed with joy. ‘I’m beyond emotion, my heart’s going to pop out of my chest,’ she said.
