UCS 2016Are You An Indian?
How often have you heard or said “I’m part Indian”? If you have, then
some Native American elders have something to teach you. A very touching
example was told by a physician from Oregon who discovered as an adult
that he was Indian. This is his story. Listen well to the story he tells:
[5] Some twenty or more years ago while serving the Mono and Chukchanse
and Chownumnee communities in the Sierra Nevada, I was asked to make
a house call on a Mono elder. She was 81 years old and had contracted
pneumonia after falling on frozen snow while picking up some firewood.
I was surprised that she had asked me to come since she had always
[10] avoided anything to do with the services provided through the local agencies.
However, it seemed that she had decided I might be alright because I had
helped her grandson through some difficult times earlier and had been
studying Mono language with the 2nd graders at North Fork School.
She greeted me from inside her house, directing me into her bedroom
[15] with the sound of her voice. She was not willing to go to the hospital like her
family had pleaded, but was determined to stay in her own place and wanted
me to help her using herbs that she knew and trusted but felt too weak to
prepare by herself. I had learned to use about a dozen native medicinal plants
by that time, but was inexperienced in using herbs in a life or death situation.
[20] She eased my fears with her kind eyes and gentle voice. I stayed with her for
the next two days, treating her with herbal medicine (and some vitamin C that
she agreed to accept).
She made it through and we became friends. One evening several years
later, she asked me if I knew my elders. I told her that I was half Canadian and
[25] half Appalachian from Kentucky. I told her that my Appalachian grandfather
was raised by his Cherokee mother but nobody had ever talked much about
that and I didn’t want anyone to think that I was pretending to be an Indian. I
was uncomfortable saying I was part Indian and never brought it up in normal
conversation.
[30] “What! You’re part Indian?” she said. “I wonder, would you point the part
of yourself that’s Indian. Show me what part you mean.”
I felt quite foolish and troubled by what she said, so I stammered out
something to the effect that I didn’t understand what she meant. Thankfully
the conversation stopped at that point. I finished bringing in several days
[35]worth of firewood for her, finished the yerba santa tea she had made for me
and went home still thinking about her words.
Some weeks later we met in the grocery store in town and she looked
down at one of my feet and said, “I wonder if that foot is an Indian foot. Or
maybe it’s your left ear. Have you figured it out yet? “I laughed out loud,
[40]blushing and stammering like a little kid. When I got outside after shopping,
she was standing beside my pick-up, smiling and laughing. “You know, she
said, “you either are or you aren’t. No such thing as part Indian. It’s how your
heart lives in the world, how you carry yourself. I knew before I asked you.
Nobody told me. Now don’t let me hear you say you are part Indian anymore.”
[45] She died last year, but I would like her to know that I’ve heeded her
words. And I’ve come to think that what she did for me was a teaching that
the old ones tell people like me, because others have told me that a Native
American elder also said almost the same thing to them. I know her wisdom
helped me to learn who I was that day and her words have echoed in my
[50] memory ever since. And because of her, I am no longer part Indian.

Government air strikes have hit three clinics in rebel-held districts of Aleppo on Friday, rescue workers and sources in the city said.
One strike on the Al-Marja neighbourhood wounded several people, including at least one nurse, the civil defence, known as the White Helmets, said.
Other medical facilities were destroyed1 in Bustan Qaser and Al-Qoba.
No deaths were reported2 after the attacks but at least ten civilians died on separate strikes in the Bustan Qaser neighbourhood.
The clinic in Al-Marja had been providing dental services and treatment for chronic illnesses for about five years.
Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, reporting from the Syria-Turkey border, said that it had been effectively destroyed in the strike.
“This is a medical centre that deals with chronic illnesses and dental surgery,” he said. “But it is being used, obviously every facility possible is being used, for medical treatment in Aleppo right now.”
The attack came after the Syrian army said in a statement that a “regime of calm” would be enforced in parts of Latakia and Damascus regions from 1am local time (22:00 GMT) on April 30.
It will last for 24 hours in the Eastern Ghouta region east of Damascus and in Damascus, and for 72 hours in areas of the northern Latakia countryside, the statement from the Syrian Army General Command said.
It did not mention Aleppo.
‘Violence is soaring’
Earlier this week, at least 50 people were killed3 - including two doctors - when air strikes hit the Al-Quds hospital and a nearby block of flats in the rebel-held Sukkari neighbourhood, according to Doctors Without Borders.
The attack on the hospital, which is supported4 by Doctors Without Borders, has been roundly condemned by world leaders, including US Secretary of State John Kerry, who said it appeared to be a “deliberate strike”.
More than 200 civilians have been killed in Aleppo over the past week as rebels have pounded government-held neighbourhoods with rocket and artillery fire, and the government has hit rebel areas with air raids.
Are the US and Russia helping or deceiving the Syrians?
On Friday, air strikes on rebel-held districts killed two civilians, one of them a child, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
In Geneva, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said the latest reports of civilian deaths in Syria revealed a “monstrous disregard for civilian lives by all parties to the conflict”
In a statement released on Friday, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein urged all sides to step back from a return to an all-out war.
The UN official said “the violence is soaring back to the levels we saw prior to the cessation of hostilities” in late February. He added that targeting medical facilities and markets could “amount to war crimes”.

UNIFOR Medicina 2016/2Rio Olympics: South Korea unveils anti-Zika uniform

(CNN) The Rio Olympics are less than 100 days away and it seems South Korean athletes are taking no chances when it comes to the threat of contracting the Zika virus.
South Korea’s stars will wear tracksuits which have been infused with insect repellant designed to keep mosquitoes away, as well as long pants and blazers for the opening and closing ceremonies.
Athletes are not allowed to have their actual kit infused but will be able to spray themselves with repellent before competing.
The World Health Organization declared Zika a global public health emergency three months ago. The virus has been shown to cause microcephaly in babies and is linked to some cases of muscle-weakening disease Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has told pregnant women to stay away from areas where Zika is prevalent and has issued guidelines for those who may wish to become pregnant.
Other nations, such as Germany, have yet to adopt South Korea’s approach, instead of taking a more casual approach to leisurewear.
The Olympics run from August 5-21 with the Paralympics starting on September 7 and concluding on September 18th.
