Good morning on this ominous Friday. The skies in this (unofficial) last weekend of summer are looking temperamental. Expect a dazzling day today, with a high near 81. But the effects of Hurricane Hermine, in Florida now, could bring heavy rain and strong winds later in the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The silver lining: This might be just the medicine we need. New York is thirsty. We\'re in the midst of a statewide drought.

We\'ve had a hotter and drier summer than normal, said Carlie Buccola, a Weather Service meteorologist. Summer in the city averages roughly 74 degrees, Ms. Buccola told us, but this year, we clocked in near 77. And we normally get almost 13.5 inches of rain, but this summer, we got just under 12.

Bread Is Better Than Ever

 

Thirty years ago, Americans lived on processed White bread, and it was almost impossible to find a fresh baguette or a loaf of sourdough. My friend Eli Zabar began baking fresh breads in a brick oven in the basement of this store E.A.T. on Madison Avenue in New York City, and now there are extraordinary artisanal bakers in cities and towns all across America. Even better, bakers like Dan Barber at Blue Hill at Stone Barns now grow and seek out heirloom wheat and use it to make bread that is not only delicious but good for you too.

Maybe Amazon heard all of the complaints about Prime Day from last year and really took them to heart. Some combination of more competitive pricing, a better selection of deals, more awareness among shoppers, and the fact that there are simply way more Amazon Prime members compared with a year ago appears to have made the second edition of Prime Day, held on July 12, a huge success in terms of generating sales.
