The latest software update for iPhone 6 handsets is rendering the devices useless if it detects repairs not carried _____ by Apple. The problem is known as “error 53” and has appeared in Apple products before. The Guardian reports that users’ phones were disabled after the Touch ID home button was repaired by a non-Apple engineer. Apple has confirmed that the error message is a “security measure” taken to prevent fraudulent transactions. “We take customer security very seriously and error 53 is the result of security checks designed to protect our customers. iOS checks that the Touch ID sensor in your iPhone or iPad correctly matches your device’s other components”, it said in a statement. “If iOS finds a mismatch, the check fails and Touch ID, including for Apple Pay use, is disabled. This security measure is necessary to protect your device and prevent a fraudulent Touch ID sensor _____ being used. If a customer encounters error 53, we encourage them to contact Apple Support.” In its report, the Guardian cites the experiences of a freelance photographer, Antonio Olmos, who says the problem occurred on his phone after he upgraded its software. “When Olmos, who says he has spent thousands of pounds on Apple products _____ the years, took it to an Apple store in London, staff told him there was nothing they could do, and that his phone was now junk”, the paper reported. Many iPhone 6 customers have been discussing error 53 on-line. At Apple’s discussion forums, one user named wallihall wrote: “With this update I’m unable to use the phone, and still have to pay for the phone itself. I did get the front screen replaced, and I understand that it’s now considered ‘tampered with’, but at least let me use my iPhone _____the old iOS system... I can’t retrieve old photos or important documents I once had”. Apple told the paper that iPhone software checks whether any repairs were authorised by Apple. A spokeswoman said: “When an iPhone is serviced by an unauthorised repair provider, faulty screens or other invalid components that affect the touch ID sensor could cause the check to fail if the pairing cannot be validated.”

THE Youth Offending Service (YOS) is appealing for volunteers to take part in its established mentoring programme. Volunteers are needed for the “The Promise Project” which is a scheme to help youngsters who are, or are in danger of becoming, involved in the criminal justice system. This Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership funded scheme works with 10 to 18 year olds from across the local area and provides positive role models who work with the youngsters to help create positive changes in their lives. Mentors work in a one-to-one relationship with a young person who has signed an Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC), agreeing to stop committing antisocial acts. They voluntarily give time to receive and provide support, guidance and encouragement. The mentors also help young people to occupy their leisure time in a constructive manner and encourage development by helping them find employment or education. Anyone interested in helping to change the life of a local youngster by becoming a mentor, should contact the Blackwood-based Youth Offending Service on 01495235623.

Ellen donates prize tickets to charity
A YOUNG competition winner has donated her prize cinema tickets to a South Wales charity. Ellen King, 12, donated the tickets to see Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian to the Miskin Project. Ellen, from St John Baptist Schoolin Aberdare, won the tickets by taking part in St Tydfil Shopping Centre's design a character competition. The prize tickets were initially meant for Ellen to take her school class, however she kindly thought of the Miskin Project. The Miskin Project supports teenagers who may be considered vulnerable or at risk of harm, the project also offers support to children in foster care. Matthew Free, one of the team at the Miskin Project said “We would really like to offer our thanks to Ellen who donated the tickets”.

Technology plays a key role in teenage romance from initial encounters to eventual break-ups, says a US study.

Teenagers rarely meet online but do use technology for flirting, asking out, meeting up and parting, American think tank, the Pew Research Center, found. A survey of 1,060 US teenagers aged 13 to 17 revealed that technology brings them closer but also breeds jealousy. "Digital platforms are powerful tools for teens," said Amanda Lenhart, lead author of the report from Pew. "But even as teens enjoy greater closeness with partners and a chance to display their relationships for others to see, mobile and social media can also be tools for jealousy, meddling and even troubling behaviour."

Digital romance, broken down

Of the 1,060 teenagers surveyed: • 35% said they were currently dating and 59% of that group said technology made them feel closer to their partner • For boys who were dating, 65% said social media made them more connected to a significant other while it was 52% for girls • 27% of dating teenagers thought social media made them feel jealous or insecure in relationships • 50% of all teens surveyed, dating or not, said they had indicated interest by friending someone on Facebook or other social media and 47% expressed attraction by likes and comments • Texting is king - 92% of teens who were dating said they texted a partner, assuming the partner would check in with "great regularity" • Jealousy happens, but not as much as flirting does - 11% of teenage daters reported accessing a partner's online accounts and 16% reported having a partner asking them to de-friend someone What gets discussed during all those frequent social media enabled check-ins? According to the survey, it is mostly "funny stuff" followed by "things you're thinking about" as well as other information such as where they are and what their friends have been doing. And forget having to meet up to resolve a conflict - 48% of dating teenagers said that could be done by texting or talking online. Online tools, with their accessibility and ease of use, also showed some signs of giving this group relationship anxiety. Females are more likely to be subject to unwanted flirting and 25% of teenagers surveyed said they have blocked or unfriended someone because of uncomfortable flirting. And 15% of teenage daters said a partner had used the internet to pressure them into unwanted sexual activity.

'More than emojis'

Nearly half the respondents admitted to concentrating on their phone ahead of their partner when together with 43% of dating teens saying that had happened to them. "I don't think this survey reveals much that is surprising. But it is affirming. Humans are social animals and we build tools to connect with each other,"wrote Julie Beck, an associate editor at The Atlantic news site, of the survey's findings. "It's not all heart emojis all the time, no, but the tools that facilitate relationships facilitate all aspects of them, good and bad. "Connecting with others is scary, hard, sometimes dangerous, but usually, hopefully, good. The teens get it."

Federal health officials on Monday urged pregnant women to stay away from a Miami neighborhood where they have discovered additional cases of Zika infection — apparently the first time the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised people not to travel to a place in the continental United States.

Florida officials said the number of Zika cases caused by local mosquitoes had risen to 14 from the four announced on Friday: 12 men and two women. They declined to say whether either woman was pregnant. All of the cases have been in one neighborhood.

Health officials said they still did not expect the number of local cases to grow into anything comparable to the epidemic that has raged across Latin America in recent months

The 10 newly identified patients were most likely infected weeks ago, as early as mid-June, the officials said.

But the new information casts doubt over the effectiveness of weeks of intensive mosquito-control efforts in South Florida and raises questions about tourism in the state, which drew more than 100 million visitors last year.

Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the director of the C.D.C., said that the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits the Zika virus, has proved to be a wily adversary in Wynwood, a crowded, urban neighborhood in north Miami where all the cases were found. The mosquito may be resistant to the insecticides being used or may be able to hide in standing water.

“Aggressive mosquito control measures don’t seem to be working as well as we would like,” he said in a press briefing on Monday.

The authorities had expected additional cases of Zika infection linked to the neighborhood, he said. But officials were particularly concerned by indications over the weekend that “moderately high” numbers of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and their larvae were still being found in a one-square-mile section in Wynwood, an area of warehouses, art galleries, restaurants, bars, apartments and condominiums.

“We advise pregnant women to avoid travel to this area,” Dr. Frieden said, “and pregnant women who live and work in this area and their partners to make every effort to avoid mosquito bites and practice safe sex.”

Pregnant women who traveled to the neighborhood on or after June 15 should talk with their doctors about getting tested for possible infection, he said.
