The Surprising Secret to Weight Loss
If you're looking for a simple way to lose weight and improve your health, don't look to flashy ads or trendy diets. Instead, try this often-overlooked plan: fiber-rich meals.
If you're like most people, you're probably familiar with common weight-loss tricks: always eat breakfast. Bypass fried and fatty foods. Boost your intake of fruits and vegetables. Drink plenty of water. But you may not realize an often-overlooked secret to weight loss and health: fiber-rich foods.
Fiber is an essential part of any diet, but Americans are often shortchanged on it. While dietitians recommend that adults consume between 25 and 38 grams of fiber a day, recent studies find that most adults get less than half that amount – between 11 and 19 grams a day. You may be surprised to learn that fiber is not only important for good health and proper nutrition – it's also a key part of weight loss.
OK, so what is fiber, anyway?
"Fiber is a part of foods that cannot be digested," says Dawn Jackson, a registered dietitian and author of Superfood Swap. "It's found in plant foods, and there are two kinds – soluble and insoluble."
The two types react differently in water – soluble fiber dissolves in water, becoming gummy, while insoluble fiber doesn't dissolve in water. "Soluble fiber acts more like a sponge," says Jackson. "It helps suck cholesterol out and lower bad cholesterol levels." Insoluble fiber acts more like a broom than a sponge, essentially sweeping out your intestines and keeping the area clean, adds Jackson. "They both play different roles, but they're equally important in promoting general health," she says.
But fiber has other benefits too. "We've also been linking diets high in fiber to a decreased risk of colon cancer, diverticulosis, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer," says Jackson. "And because it lowers cholesterol levels, fiber is related to improved heart health." Increasing fiber intake may also help people with diabetes manage their blood sugar.

BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE) IN SCHOOLS
It is generally accepted that regular exercise improves health and fitness. Health can be defined as a state of complete mental, social and physical well-being; not merely the absence of illness or infirmity. Fitness has been described as the ability to meet the demands of the environment.
The benefits from doing regular physical exercise include:
• improved confidence;
• relief from tension / stress;
• weight loss / control;
• improved posture / body shape;
• improvement in co-operation / team skills;
• meeting people /making friends.
As children are continuously developing physically and emotionally, they are especially affected by the benefits of activity; conversely, there can be negative effects of inactivity.
Schools cannot control or dictate the amount of exercise a child gets at home or outside school. Consequently, it is vital that schools provide formal PE lessons to ensure that children stay active and get some form of regular exercise, especially as they spend a good proportion of the day there. The PE programs in schools directly affect a child’s health; some of the health benefits being:
• combating obesity;
• reducing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, asthma;
• sleep disorders and other illnesses.
So, what are the most common sports that school children participate in? A 2013 UK study by the Department of Education titled, Evidence on Physical Education and Sport in Schools reported that:
• 5-10 year olds were mostly doing swimming and tennis.
• 11-15 year olds participated in football, tennis, rugby, cricket, table tennis and athletics.
• Across both age groups there had been a significant reduction of walking/hiking.
Generally, school PE programs will focus primarily on the actual physical aspect however there is now a shift in emphasis towards also learning about the fundamentals of healthy lifestyles. In addition to plenary sessions, schools are using game-based activities that are fun and educational to promote the importance of exercise, healthy food, balanced diets, importance of sleep, ‘5-a-day’, consequences of smoking, drugs and alcohol, impact of eating too much sugar, salt and fat, junk food etc.
Globally, all schools will have PE as part of their curriculum at all stages of the child’s school career and will usually insist on the child’s participation in the designated activity. This aspect of their education should help children to evolve and grow but at the same time maintain their desire to continue with ‘PE’ post their formal school career.

WASHINGTON — President Trump paid tribute on Tuesday to the airline passengers and crew members who stormed the cockpit of a hijacked plane and thwarted terrorists in the skies over Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, vowing to follow their example by standing up to evil in the world. In his first trip to Shanksville, Pa., as president, Mr. Trump led a ceremony marking the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attacks by honoring the heroes who brought down United Airlines Flight 93 into an unpopulated field rather than allow it to be used as a weapon against the nation’s capital. “We remember the moment when America fought back,” Mr. Trump said in a televised address at the Flight 93 National Memorial at the site of the crash, which killed 40 passengers and crew members. Referring to those on board who rose up that day in an effort to take back the plane, he said, “They boarded the planes as strangers and they entered eternity linked together as true heroes.”Ceremonies were also held on Tuesday in New York, where two hijacked planes slammed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, and at the Pentagon, where another plane was used to attack the headquarters of the American military. Vice President Mike Pence and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis led the commemoration at the Pentagon. In New York, police officers gathered at the Midtown North Precinct where flags were lowered to half-staff and names were read of colleagues who were lost rushing into buildings trying to save lives. “Never miss a chance to let those held dearest know your love for them,” the precinct said on its Twitter feed, using a heart symbol for the word love. Mr. Trump was at Trump Tower on the day of the attack, not far from the World Trade Center. He famously claimed during his presidential campaign that “thousands and thousands of people were cheering” in Muslim communities in Jersey City, N.J., when the World Trade Center collapsed, an assertion that has been widely debunked. As he traveled to Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Mr. Trump offered praise for Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was the mayor of New York on the day of attacks and now serves as his personal attorney. “Rudy Giuliani did a GREAT job as Mayor of NYC during the period of September 11th,” Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter. “His leadership, bravery and skill must never be forgotten. Rudy is a TRUE WARRIOR!” Mr. Trump made no mention of former President George W. Bush or other political leaders from that day.

Saint Patrick’s Day, also known as The Feast of Saint Patrick, is a traditional holiday celebrated every year on March 17th, the day the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, died. Patrick, who was born in the fourth century, lived in the British Isles, a land that had been invaded and conquered first by the Romans and then by Germanic tribes. At the age of 16, Patrick was captured and taken as a slave from the British Isles to what is now Ireland. He lived there for several years herding sheep. He was a religious boy, and he prayed that he would someday return to his homeland. Legend has it that one night while he was praying, a voice told him to escape from the farm, and find a ship that was waiting for him in a harbor two hundred miles away. Patrick got to the ship, sailed to Europe, and disembarked in what is now probably France. He led several of the ship’s crew through a dangerous forest, praying all the time. Neither Patrick nor any member of his crew was captured. When some of the men were about to die of starvation, wild animals appeared to them to eat. Events such as these appeared to be miracles and gave rise to later legends surrounding Patrick. Finally finding his way home, Patrick felt that he was called by God to perform an important mission. He believed it was his duty to go back to Ireland and convert the Celtic people to the Christian Religion. Patrick arrived in England and became a missionary, traveling from village to village and talking about his faith. Once, several members of a tribe approached Patrick and told him that they found it difficult to understand and believe in the Holy Trinity. Patrick thought a moment, then stooped down and picked one of the plentiful shamrocks growing wild around Ireland. “Here are three leaves”, he said, “yet it is one plant. Imagine the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit as each of these leaves. Here they are, yet they are one plant.” The tribesmen understood, because Patrick had used a familiar object to explain. From that time on, the shamrock has been a revered symbol of Ireland. There are lots of stories about Patrick. One of them is about him forcing snakes out of the entire country of Ireland. Even though there are many different stories about how he accomplished such a task, it is probably not true. Patrick died on March 17th, and the Irish people set aside the day to mourn. He became the patron saint of Ireland. Mourning turned to commemorating him and celebrating his life. Because of Saint Patrick, lots of cities around the world with a large population of Irish have parades. Green is one of the national colors of Ireland. Green stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green shirts, ties, hair ribbons, and hats. There are even pubs which serve green beer on that day. Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian holiday in the early seventeenth century. It is now observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Not only that, but it also celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.
