The idea of comfort food sounds great in theory, but many of society’s favourite feel-good foods lack ideal nutrients. This leaves eaters feeling cranky, not comforted. “Some of the main dietary contributors to low or bad mood are too much sugar and too many starchy and refined carbohydrates,” British nutritional therapist Claudia Smith told Huffington Post. “If you eat too much of these foods, you can end up with blood sugar spikes and crashes, which can lead to symptoms such as low mood, irritability, brain fog, anxiety, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.”
Common comfort foods such as cookies or french fries activate reward triggers in our brains, Smith said. They give us something to look forward to or get excited about. Psychologist and well-being consultant Lee Chambers told Huffington Post that comfort foods do provide a hit of pleasureinducing dopamine, but that pleasure is fleeting.
“Emotional eating is a cyclical process where low mood leads to eating foods likely to spike your blood sugar, giving us a dose of dopamine, but then it drops at the same time as we start to feel guilty,” Chambers told Huffington Post. “This combination often makes us feel a lack of satisfaction, with feelings of guilt, shame and regret.”
Even worse? Comfort foods often lead to overeating. “Over time, high consumption of highly palatable foods may actually lead to a reduced sensitivity of this brain-reward response,” Smith said. “You may find yourself needing to eat more and more to experience the same effect.”

The Family Role During Patient’s Hospitalization
Family has a significant role in hospital treatment of patients, since it can provide effective psychological and emotional support to patients undergoing treatment to hospital. Additionally, the above role of family is not only significant for adults but also for children and pregnant women, who need their husbands during their childbirth. Consequently, the medical and nursing staff needs to maintain a continuous contact with parents and relatives of patients, and provide them with the appropriate information concerning the condition of their patient and the progress of the therapeutic programme.
Moreover, the role of family, friends, and relatives is of vital importance for the maintenance of quality of life in hospitalized patients with chronic problems. This, because family can satisfy basic needs of the patient in the hospital to a large extent. Additionally, family can help him decrease his stress, while it can encourage him to correspond effectively in the therapeutic form he follows.
The reciprocal effect takes place because family is a social system, which is constituted by individuals interacting with each other. Thus, any change in the system influences its stability. Since family constitutes a system, illness of a member of the system has a direct effect on all the system. Moreover, the way that the system reacts has a direct effect on the member that suffers. Consequently, the more effectively the system functions, the better its members are adapted. For this reason, all the members of family need to adapt to various problems of patients, in order to provide them with effective psychological and emotional support.

Why smelling good could come with a cost to health
About 4,000 chemicals are currently used to scent products, but you won’t find any of them listed on a label. Fragrance formulations are considered a “trade secret” and therefore protected from disclosure – even to regulators or manufacturers. Instead, one word, fragrance, appears on ingredients lists for countless cosmetics, personal care and cleaning products. A single scent may contain anywhere from 50 to 300 distinct chemicals.
Three-quarters of the toxic chemicals detected in a test of 140 products came from fragrance, reported a 2018 BCPP study of personal care and cleaning brands. The chemicals identified were linked to chronic health issues, including cancer.
Besides common reactions to fragrance – about 35% of people report migraines or respiratory problems because of fragrance. More than 1,200 fragrance chemicals currently in use have been flagged as potential or known “chemicals of concern”. These include seven carcinogens, 15 chemicals prohibited from use in cosmetics in the EU and others cited in various international warning lists. Endocrine disrupters, which mimic human hormones, are of particular concern to many researchers and advocates, as they can have effects in the tiniest doses.
Trying to avoid fragrance chemicals is perhaps one of the trickiest modern consumer challenges. Even products labeled as unscented could have some fragrance to mask the smell of other chemicals. Watchdogs also caution that even products claiming to be “natural” or “organic” could still be harboring harmful fragrances.

Is Listening to Music Good For Your Health?
Studies have shown that music can buoy your mood and fend off depression. It can also improve blood flow in ways similar to statins, lower your levels of stress-related hormones like cortisol and ease pain. Listening to music before an operation can even improve post-surgery outcomes.
How can music do so much good? Music seems to “selectively activate” neurochemical systems and brain structures associated with positive mood, emotion regulation, attention and memory in ways that promote beneficial changes, says Kim Innes, a professor of epidemiology at West Virginia University’s School of Public Health.
Innes coauthored a 2016 study that found music-listening could boost mood and well-being and improve stress-related measures in older adults suffering from cognitive decline. Her study compared the benefits of music to those of meditation—a practice in vogue for its mental-health perks. She found that both practices were linked to significant improvements in mood and sleep quality. “Both meditation and music listening are potentially powerful tools for improving overall health and well-being,” Innes says. If the idea of listening to music seems a lot more practicable to you than meditating, these findings are great news.
But music can also agitate and unsettle, experts have learned.
“Silence can be better than random listening,” says Joanne Loewy, an associate professor and director of the Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York. “Some of our data show that putting on any old music can actually induce a stressful response.”
Along with inducing stress, Loewy says, the wrong music can promote rumination or other unhelpful mental states. One 2015 study from Finland found that music can bolster negative emotions—like anger, aggression or sadness— much the same way it can counteract these feelings. Why? The rhythm and other characteristics of the songs we select can modulate our heart rates and the activity of our brain’s neural networks.

How can having Bad Teeth Affect Your Heart?
Poor oral hygiene can affect more than your smile. Studies have shown that heart disease is linked to poor oral care because of the body’s response to inflammation caused by bacteria from infection.
Oral hygiene issues like cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and untreated tooth decay can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. Although more research needs to be done on the link between oral care and heart disease, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of heart disease as a result of poor oral hygiene.
An untreated cavity can lead to periodontal disease, which causes your gums to recede from your teeth. The gap between the gum line is where bacteria can hide and grow that can enter your bloodstream and travel to your heart’s arteries.
When the bacteria in your heart’s arteries harden, a condition called atherosclerosis can form where plaque grows on the inner walls of the arteries. This restricts blood flow throughout the body and leads to heart disease.
Infected gums are sensitive, red, and may bleed when brushing or flossing. Gum infection is often a result of poor oral hygiene and should be addressed right away to prevent a condition called endocarditis.
This rare but serious heart condition develops when bacteria from infected gums spreads to the inner linings of the heart, which directly affects the heart’s valves. Endocarditis increases your risk of a heart attack.
The best way to protect your heart is to maintain a good athome oral care routine.
