This story is about Naseeruddin Hodja, who is a well-known character in the Middle East. A week later Hodja went to his neighbor’s house ______________ to borrow another large pot. ‘I will lend you the same pot again,’ his neighbor said, ‘if you promise to bring it back next week.’ Hodja promised and off he went with the pot. Again, two weeks went by and the neighbor went to Hodja’s house to ask for his pot. ‘I am very sorry,’ said Hodja. ‘I cannot give you your pot because it has died.’ The neighbor was so angry that he shouted at Hodja. ‘Don’t think I am foolish enough to believe a story like that. Everyone knows that cooking pots can’t die.’ ‘Please, don’t be angry,’ said Hodja.

Seen through a large telescope, this planet is one of the most beautiful sights in the sky. To the naked eye it looks just like a yellowish-white star; to see the rings you need binoculars which will magnify at least $10$ times. It is the second largest planet, a gas giant, with incredibly winds blowing through its belts of cloud. Those around the equator blow at $1800$ kph, ten times stronger than any on Earth. His skill in grinding lenses with unusual accuracy enabled Dutch physicist, Christiaan Huygens, to construct much more powerful telescopes than those which Galileo had used. With one of these he discovered this planet’s beautiful ring system in $1655$, and a fourth moon. He also invented the pendulum clock, which meant that with much more accurate clocks, exact time measurements of star movements could be kept.

Reaping the rewards of indolence

      Although the country has been spared the worst of the financial crisis, the economy is weakening. Redundancies have shot up, reversing the job growth of recent years in the formal economy (see chart). Embraer, a maker of jets, laid off $20\%$ of its workers on February $19th$. Vale, a mining giant, has cut $1,300$ jobs and put more than $5,000$ other workers on forced leave. Industrial production in December dropped $12\%$, the biggest fall in $17$ years of record-keeping by the federal statistics agency.

      This sharp slowdown will make for a grim year. Marcelo Carvalho, an economist at Morgan Stanley, has been forecasting no growth in $2009$ and his view is fast becoming mainstream. Brazil is likely to be as late out of the downturn as it was late in. If the past is a guide, its industrial production has followed China’s exports up and down, with a lag of one quarter.

      Yet by comparison with Brazil’s recent past, and also with what other countries are experiencing, the economy is in fair shape. The IMF forecasts that only the developing countries in Asia (which are poorer than Brazil), Africa and the Middle East will do better in $2009$. Given Brazil’s previous tendency to go into cardiac arrest whenever economies elsewhere became stressed, this is impressive. Argentina’s crisis in $2001$ and the Asian and Russian crises of $1997$-$98$ were painful and disruptive for Brazil. The country’s hypersensitivity to the vagaries of the world economy stretches back to at least the $1930$s, when Brazil suffered a military coup during the Depression.
