The cost of vaccine hesitancy
Some medical professionals refer to this idea as “vaccine hesitancy”. The term can refer to a fear of a particular vaccine, or a concern that a baby’s immune system isn’t ready yet. Vaccine hesitancy might seem relatively harmless, but Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, said it can have costly effects. When it comes to vaccination issues, sick children missing class and falling behind in school aren’t the only costs: “Somebody has to take care of that child when they’re home, so that may very well be a day of work for someone”, Benjamin noted, adding that there are also “health care costs if that child gets a complication from pertussis or measles or chickenpox”. In the case of measles, as was seen in the Disneyland outbreak, what starts out as a rash can lead to dangerous and expensive complications such as deafness, cardiovascular complications, induced pneumonia, and even death.

Protect the lone Amazonian tribesman. He deserves to live in peace
By Fiona Watson
I was standing on the edge of a patch of Amazon rainforest in Brazil. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but monochrome; vast soy plantations and tamed pasture for cattle. I peered into that last oasis of Amazonian green; somewhere in there was a person, a survivor, who was living through the unimaginable.
This man was the last of his tribe. He had survived the waves of genocidal attacks in the 1970s and 80s, as loggers and ranchers bulldozed their way through the forest denuding it of trees and life. These invaders murdered his entire family, his community, and neighbouring communities too. Fleeing the guns and hiding in the forest was his only survival strategy; to live out his remaining days totally on his own, hunting wild game and growing a few vegetables and fruits in his small garden.
One of the few outsiders ever to set foot on his land, I was there in 2005 with Funai, the governmental protection agency for tribal peoples in Brazil. I was with their indigenous land protection team as part of my work for Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples. I was not there to make contact with this man; I was there to help ensure the security of his territory and protect his right to live as he has chosen to. Survival International believes the choice whether or not to make contact with mainstream society must only be made by the people themselves; it is never up to others to decide for them.

What are the side effects of vitamin D supplementation?
Hypercalcemia and kidney damage are possible side effects of vitamin D supplementation. Doctors tend to consider vitamin D levels to be adequate if there are at least 20 nanograms (ng) of the vitamin per milliliter (mL) of blood. If levels rise above 50 ng/mL, a person may experience adverse side effects. However, most research indicates that the toxicity threshold for vitamin D is fairly high, around 200-240 ng/mL. A person with levels of vitamin D in this range usually consumes between 10,000 and 40,000 international units (IUs) of the vitamin per day.

Multiple, overlapping factors can mean big differences in flood risk
By Katy Daigle and Carolyn Gramling
In the 20th century, ocean levels rose by a global average of about 14 centimeters, mainly due to melting ice and warming waters. Some coastal areas saw more sea level rise than others. Here’s why
____________________
As water heats up, its molecules take up more space, contributing to global sea level rise. Local weather systems can influence that effect. In 2017 scientists reported in Geophysical Research Letters that weakening monsoon winds have resulted in hotter surface ocean temperatures in the northern Indian Ocean, causing local sea level rise. Those weaker winds curtailed ocean circulation that normally brings cooler water up from the deep. Surface waters in the Arabian Sea, for example, got warmer than usual and expanded, raising sea levels near the island nation of Maldives at a slightly faster rate than the global average.

Birth control pills and blinking
In 1994, researchers found that women who take birth control pills blink more often than women who do not. Quite a lot more, actually; on average, the study found, women on birth control pills are blinking about 32 percent more than women not using this method of contraception.
Although this appears to be a strange side effect, it is worth noting that — according to Alexandra Pope and Jane Bennett’s 2008 book The Pill: Are you sure it’s for you? – birth control pills affect more than 150 of the body’s biological functions. Some of these changes, the authors note, are drastic, while others barely register.
