New species of ‘pumpkin toadlet’ poisonous frog discovered in Brazil
It’s poisonous, it glows green under ultraviolet light and it’s bright orange. This is a new species of poisonous frog found by researchers in the mountains of Brazil. A research team studying the differences between populations of pumpkin toadlets discovered the new species in the southern Mantiqueira mountains in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. The discovery followed two years of field surveys at the Projeto Dacnis reserve and Reserva das Araucárias, both in the state of São Paulo. The frog, named Brachycephalus rotenbergae, is differentiated from other pumpkin toadlets by its more rounded snout, dark spots on its head and a different acoustic profile to its song which are unlike those of pumpkin toadlets already described. They also suggested its bright orange colors could be more important for communication than its song. Some species of pumpkin toadlets are unable to hear even their own calls. When exposed to ultraviolet light, parts of the frog’s head and abdomen are seen glowing neon green, though the scientists said they still don’t know why. The toadlets secrete a poison called tetrodotoxin, which is the same toxin found in fugu fish. The team aims to conduct further research on the bright orange toadlets to learn why they are fluorescent and also to monitor them for conservation purposes. “There’s an idea that fluorescence acts as signals for potential mates, to signal to rival males or some other biological role,” Professor Nunes said according to the Smithsonian Magazine. Though the species does not appear to be endangered, the scientists warned that growing numbers of feral boar in the area could pose a problem to the pumpkin toadlets in the future, and further monitoring is planned.

Video game addiction is a common problem for people of all ages. However, young people are profoundly affected by tech addiction and its symptoms. Besides that, gaming addiction symptoms are prevalent among teens who spend many hours on social media, playing video games, and engaging with other forms of tech. The primary symptoms of this type of technology addiction are: loss of self-control with the amount of time they spend gaming; needing to play video games for longer stretches of time in order to feel “good”; neglecting important responsibilities like work, school, and extracurricular activities; social isolation from friends, family, and peers; physical aches and pains; loss of self-control with gaming devices.
When asking the question: “Is gaming addictive for teenagers?” one way we find the answer is through looking at many teens’ compulsive behavior with tech. Many teenagers feel intensely compelled to stay glued to their screens, which is a telltale sign of screen addiction. The tech addiction teens often struggle with typically manifests in the form of lack of self-control with digital devices. For example, a teen may feel an intense urge to check on their social media pages every few minutes. Or, they might spend hours at a time playing video games without feeling like any time has passed. Gaming addiction would lead to increased anxiety, depression, insecurity, and other issues for teens, making it difficult to their school performance and harming their social relationships.

The spread of fake news can have both personal and academic consequences. In a perfect world everything reported would be based only on facts and you would be able to trust that the media you consume is reliable. But unfortunately that’s not the case. You should learn to spot false information because fake news can:
1. Call into question the credibility of your sources. As a student you are expected to find, evaluate, and reference trustworthy information sources in a variety of formats. If you include fake news as evidence for your arguments or as part of your research it may raise doubts about the integrity of the sources you use as a whole and your ability to identify quality information. Maintain the respect of your professors, peers, friends, and family by citing only true, credible news and information sources.
2. Provide you with false, confusing, or dishonest information used to make a decision or take action. It can be dangerous to do something without having all the facts, but it can be just as detrimental to do so based on inaccurate information. Whether it’s political, medical, academic, or personal, you need to be able to recognize when the information you are taking in can be trusted to help you make an intelligent, fact-based choice.
